The ravages of aging and degeneration of tissue is one of the vagaries of human evolution. Yet, as time has passed, lifestyles have become more affluent, and diets have improved, the life expectancy has increased from an average of about forty years some thousand years ago to about seventy-five years in the present. Most of this advance has been made in the last 150 years or so, with the foundation of modern medicine based on the use of propagated and manufactured drugs.
In the years since the Second World War and the widespread use of antibiotics and other powerful drugs, combined with survival procedures becoming more refined and recovery rates exponentially improved, the human lifespan has been expanded to its current average. And yet the big problem is the degeneration and aging at a cellular level; at the moment, it is only now really becoming understood, primarily through the increasing investigation and research being carried out instem cell treatment and the resultant stem cell therapy.
Theoretically the human body, although a fragile vehicle, is extremely resilient. Indeed, Cambridge University geneticist Aubrey de Grey has recently and famously stated, "The first person to live to be 1,000 years old is certainly alive today …whether they realize it or not, barring accidents and suicide, most people now 40 years or younger can expect to live for centuries." The sad thing for the human race if this is the case is that something will need to be done to overcome boredom — but, of course, he never made a statement about that!
Taking care of your body, both inside and out, is something only the owner can do; indeed, prolonging life by way of a healthy lifestyle and the avoidance of chemicals and compounds which adversely affect and cause tissue damage is a personal responsibility. However the advances currently being made in stem cell research certainly seem to point to a validation in the statement released by de Grey, and many treatments which help reverse and negate the aging process are available. Revitalization is the newest method in anti-aging therapy, allowing renovating and rejuvenating cellular content of organs.
Most people want to live forever but at the moment most of us have to settle for "three score years and ten" (that’s seventy, to the uninitiated). However, improving one’s chances of living a longer, healthier, and at the same time, productive life should be grabbed with both hands.
