The offset and digital print industry is one of the easiest and lowest cost businesses to break into with the advent of web to print websites for printers. With the overwhelming willingness commercial print shops are to give anyone "reseller" pricing, a regular every day person with a computer and telephone can resell printing with minimal startup and overhead.
Back in the old days, and when I refer to "the old days", I'm referring to the 90's; it was a task to order printing and also very expensive. You would have to get a design together, burn it to a CD, and lug it around town trying to find a print shop. Most searches usually ended at Kinko's, now FedEx Kinko's. The problem with that is you usually had to leave your first born as a down payment. They knew they were the big boys on the block and charged accordingly.
As the digital age matured the print industry quickly followed. Now you can find a printer's website, upload your art, place your order and forget about it. That also translates into savings because 90% of the companies you're ordering from aren't even actual printers, but resellers. What this means is that the company you're ordering from doesn't have the overhead of an actual brick and mortar shop or any associated equipment costs. They're ordering from a select few "trade printers", marking up the price, and brokering the deal.
There was a company based out of Florida that was processing over $2M a year in print sales while working out of a garage, and operating with 3 employees. The only overhead they had was the electricity, internet, marketing and payroll. Most products are marked up between 30 - 50% by the time it reaches the buyer. That $2M a year at 30% means the company grossed $600,000. If they paid each employee $100,000 and paid out $100,000 for other associated overhead (marketing, advertising, etc), the company's gross profit for that year was $200,000. All they did was market their website, receive orders, and place the order on someone else's website.
With new technology comes new opportunity and when you're talking about a multibillion dollar industry, there's a big enough pie for everyone to get a piece.
