Missing teeth, gum irritation and pain from dentures can be a problem. Whether a person is 20, 50 or 80 and needs to replace one, several or all missing teeth, dental implants can be an option. Doctor Michael E. Stratford and his team of surgical specialists and certified dental technicians can solve problems with implants. Implants are a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth. The development and use of implants has been one of the biggest advances in dentistry in the past 40 years. U.S. dentists place more than 5.5 million implants annually.
Implants are posts that are placed in the upper or lower jaw, where they function as a sturdy anchor for replacement teeth. They are made of titanium (a strong, lightweight metal) and other materials that are biologically accepted by the human body. There are many reasons to replace missing teeth. A large space between your teeth, if obvious when you smile or speak, is a cosmetic concern. Missing teeth may affect the way people hear you speak. Missing a molar tooth might not be obvious when you speak or smile, but its absence can affect chewing. When a tooth is removed, the biting forces on the remaining teeth begin to change. If a missing tooth is not replaced, the surrounding or opposing teeth can shift. Additionally, bone loss can occur around the missing tooth.
Implants fuse with the jawbone, offering firm support to man-made teeth. Dentures, bridges or single teeth mounted to the implants won't slip or shift in your mouth - a very important benefit when eating and speaking. This secure fit also helps man - made teeth feel more natural than typical bridges or dentures. And, dental implants help to preserve the bone after teeth are lost or extracted. Implants are a good value because they can last a lifetime with good care.
Most dental implant procedures involve less discomfort than a tooth extraction. When we see patients for follow-up visits, most of them say how surprised they were with how little discomfort they experienced! They also comment that they should have had the procedure done years ago!
During the healing period, dentures or partials or temporary crowns can be worn over the implants while they mature. The temporary teeth will be made prior to the removal of existing teeth in cases where tooth removal and implant replacement is necessary.
With ongoing technological advances and more durable implant materials, ten-year success rates have been reported at 95% or greater. It's good to know there are implant options for your dental problems. The first step in implant treatment is making an appointment and discussing your treatment options and asking questions. Only then can you decide whether implant treatment is right for you.
It is always a pleasure to look your best, enjoy eating again, feel confident, speak clearly and SMILE!
