We’ve told you about so many touted iPhone killers in the days gone by.

But before you skip this piece as another such claim, hear this – this one may at least be the killer of all other iPhone killers if not the real deal. We’re talking about the Motorola Droid. The phone has gained so much popularity since its recent release, that it will more likely be the general, and not just a soldier in the Android army.

Many people were contemplating that the phone manufacturer would not be able to stay afloat in today’s cut-throat smartphone market. But judging by its sales in the opening week of its launch, all doubts are put to rest.

Apparently Motorola sold one lakh phones in the first week. The device features the Eclair version (ver 2) of the Android operating system – the first phone to feature it.

From initial reports, the Texas Instruments OMAP 3430 processor is giving the device all the extra juice that other Android phones lacked in the past. Being a smartphone it has a huge 3.7 inch screen and 5MP camera which can capture video at a resolution of 720 x 480.

The Mobile Phone is ever so slightly thicker than the iPhone and yet features a slide out QWERTY keyboard. This is sure to keep the hardware keyboard fans really happy, but the keys look flat and might not be very usable. Multi tasking ie the ability to run more than one application at a time is very important for a Smartphone. The OS has always supported multitasking, and finally there is a processor on-board this machine that should perform it seamlessly.

Version 2 of Android allows home screen customisation with widgets that let you access tons of stuff simultaneously. From the hundreds of visuals available online of this nifty device, it looks like Motorola has outdone itself in the looks department too. The black body goes completely away from the rounded design philosophy that phones were going towards lately. We cant wait for this aesthetically elegant power device to fall into our hands.

It’s Open Chromium Contrary to many web rumours, Chrome OS the path-breaking operating system from Google, is not just yet ready for launch. What it has however done is gone ahead and made it Open Source – its source code will now be available for download to anyone interested. So basically, the people at Google and external coders can now work on the underlying operating system at the same time, said Sundar Pichai, Vice President of Product Management. The why of this question is rather complicated, so we’ll come back to it later.
