Newsletters create awareness in the workplace. In today’s fast-paced information age, there is no better way to directly provide information to the workforce than through a topical newsletter. The focus of the workplace newsletter should be written to promote a healthy and productive base of employees. Specifically, a health newsletter is one which keys in on issues which affect, either positively or negatively, the health, well-being and productivity of the workforce itself. Potential topics might include: nutritional advice, workplace safety and behavior, indicate common stress triggers and how to alleviate them.

Writing a health newsletter is a fun practice. It affords the writer the chance to give advice or provide information that can change the behaviors and practices of the workforce for the better. It is important to plan the topics from the inside out, meaning one core article (i.e. the primary topic of the week, month or quarter) and secondary articles which either support the primary topic, or in some way provide supplementary advice. Educating the reader is pivotal. Be certain to bring the topics to life in some demonstrable fashion. Think of the newsletter as a service provider. Information should be fluid, easily found, and provide the reader with key insights that are either often overlooked or otherwise new to them.

Be creative and utilize visual aids in the health newsletter. A picture is worth a thousand words, so they say. Utilize graphs, flow-charts, or action-itemed pictures and elaborate on what it occurring with the visual tool. Be professional, but be certain to keep it simple. Excessive or haughty rhetoric turns readers off. Explain things in the same manner in which you would explain them verbally; but be certain to use proper grammar and spelling. There is no easier way to turn people off than to write poorly, and spell incorrectly.

Identifying with your readers takes practice. The goal of the health newsletter should be to build a base of readers who remain engaged with each subsequent issue. To assist in this, choose health topics that are interesting to the workforce. Ask them what interests them through interactive surveys in the early issues. Quote members of the reader base in articles, and cite your sources for additional reading of topics. Remember, the newsletter is about self-improvement in the workforce. Find out not only what they are interested in improving in regard to their health, wellness and productivity, but also what the management team of the workforce is interested in improving.
