Cosmetic surgery has been the subject of great interest for the last few decades now. From breast implants to botox to facelifts, an increasing number of men and women are turning to plastic surgery to improve on their looks. The reasons however for doing so are plenty and don’t always revolve around the need to look beautiful.

To start with of course, it is basic human nature to be unsatisfied with our bodies. Almost all of us have that one part that we are a little ashamed of. And perhaps given a chance we would like to undergo surgery to correct it. Having such feelings often leads to insecurity. Some women may have to deal with undersized breasts or oversized noses. Men may have a portly bellies or unsightly breast fat. Undergoing cosmetic surgery in these cases would be necessary for people to be able to socialize better. It will work towards improving their personalities and self confidence. Just being comfortable with one’s body can go a long way in ensuring that people are self confident.

Another reason people opt for cosmetic treatment is because they are waging a losing battle with time and age. After a certain time, crow’s feet will begin to appear, as will age spots and wrinkles. Our skin will begin to lose its sheen and our body will begin to sag. Many people can’t really stomach this and therefore walk into a plastic surgeons’ office to help them restore their youthfulness. There are many procedures that are used to fight the signs of aging. While some are invasive others are not so much.

For some people plastic surgery is a means of correcting deformities or injuries. It becomes a necessity. Several people each year attempt to correct clefts or physical deformities that are manifested at birth. Some others require it to correct scarring and wounds that may have occurred during accidents. This becomes a necessity in order for people to mingle back in society again, without being looked on with pity. It is a means of coming back to a normal life.

For some others it is to supplement an ongoing treatment. For example in the case of breast cancer and mastectomies, some women will require surgery to help them. The reasons to opt for surgery are many. While some run skin deep others are more deep rooted. But the bottom line remains that it is a personal choice and each person’s reasons will have to be respected.
