The table game Red Dog was introduced way back in the 1980’s in Nevada casinos. If you had been playing in the casinos during that time, you can see the rising popularity of this game. However, the popularity of this game declined as time pass by, but there are still some land casinos that offer this card game. But even though it’s popularity diminished, this game is still featured in most online casino websites. Today, a similar card-based banking game exists with the same name Red Dog, but what we are about to discuss is the Red Dog that is played commonly in American casinos and online casinos.
The Red Dog is also commonly termed as Yablon, Ace Deuce, In Between, Between The Sheets, and Red Dog Poker. It is a card-based game of chance played on Blackjack-sized tables with a shoe holding one standard deck of 52 cards. In some casinos, more than one deck (usually up to 8 decks) can be used in playing Red Dog, and as the number of decks increases, the house edge decreases.
Card Values in Red Dog
Similar to most card games, the cards Two through Ten are worth their face values. Jacks are worth 11, Queens are worth 12, Kings are worth 13, and Aces are worth 14. The suites (Spade, Heart, Club, Diamond) do not matter in ranking the cards. This means that a 5 of Diamonds and a 5 of Spades are both valued as 5.
How To Play Red Dog
In playing Red Dog, the player is betting against the house. This means that as a player, you do not compete against the dealer nor against any other players. The first thing you have to do is to place your bet on the BET circle. Then you’ll be dealt with two face up cards. In online casino sites, you will have to click on the DEAL button in order to be given two cards. In order to win the game, the value of the third card that will be dealt should fall between the values of the first two cards given to you. After you are dealt with two cards, there are several scenarios that can happen.
First, if you are dealt with two consecutive cards, such as a 5 and 6 (regardless of suites), then your bet will be returned as a PUSH for it is impossible to be dealt with a third card that will be between them in terms of value.
The second, if you are dealt with a pair (a pair of Queens for example), then consider it a bonus because if the third card has the same value as one of the pair (another Queen based on the example), your bet will be paid 11 to 1. Otherwise, your bet will be returned as a PUSH.
The third, if your first two cards have at least a difference of 2 (in terms of card value), you can choose to raise or not. In online Red Dog, you have to click the RAISE button if you choose to raise, or the DON’T RAISE button if not. If you choose to raise, then you have to double your original bet. If the third card dealt to you falls between the first two cards dealt earlier, then you win the game and you will be paid based on a payout schedule. However, if the third card is not between the first two cards, then your bet is lost.
Red Dog Table Limits and Payouts
Most online casinos set a predefined table limit on how much should you bet on each Red Dog game. Usually, the minimum wager amount is $1 and the maximum is $200. If you win the game, the number of cards that falls between the first two cards will determine how much your payout is. This is termed as the SPREAD. For example, if your first cards are a 5 and a Queen (valued 12), then the spread is 6 cards because there are 6 cards between 5 and Queen (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and Jack). The lower is the card spread, the better is the payout. Following is the common winning payout schedule for Red Dog games:
-
1 card spread pays out 5 to 1
-
2 cards spread pays out 4 to 1
-
3 cards spread pays out 2 to 1
-
4 or more cards spread pays out 1 to 1
