Autism treatment is possible and that is the good news. People with autism find it difficult to express themselves through verbal or non verbal communication and are often unable to form social relationships. They are also prone to restricted or repetitive behavior. Previously people with autism were misinterpreted as being mentally retarded, but modern science has shown that many people with autism are rather highly-functioning individuals. With proper autism treatment, education and support, a real difference can be brought about in their lives. In this article, it will be discussed how autism can be treated, the different autism treatment centers for autism and also how a project taken up by the Autism Research Institute is making a difference.
Autism is one of the 5 disorders that come under the category of neurological disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders or PDD. However it does not always manifest itself in the same way among individuals, showing slight variations which makes diagnosis challenging. But they still share the common symptoms such as repetitive behaviors and copied gestures. Autism can be diagnosed very early after birth with near accuracy. There is also a real opportunity of bringing about improvement in these early years if proper autism treatment methods are followed.
The main focus of autism treatment is to manage the symptoms and improve functioning. Usually requiring life-long care, treatments are tailored according to the individual needs of the patient. Occupational and physical therapies helps individuals in learning basic functions to control body movements. Autism treatment basically includes behavior modification and communication therapy. Behavior modification helps in treating aggressive and repetitive behavior and also in improving social functions. Communication therapy is used to improve the verbal and non verbal communication skills. Though dietary modifications are still a controversy, certain vitamins and supplements may improve the attention span. Medications are also used to treat certain symptoms in patients like depression.
A project has been taken up by the Autism Research Institute that is also known as DAN or 'Defeat Autism Now'. The institute is dedicated to educating parents and clinicians on biomedically-based research, appropriate testing and safe and effective interventions. Since 1995, The Autism Research Institute has been conducting meetings for doctors, and researchers to find how to treat autism better and more effectively.
Even though the exact causes of autism are still under research, with proper treatment and therapies, people with autism can be given a news chance. Autism treatment centers are a great help in this. Sustained and intensive education programs along with a healthy support system are that is needed for autism treatment.
