Esophageal Cancer Staging is a method of describing the progression of cancerous cells, their location, to which parts they have spread and whether has affected other organs and functions in the body. Various diagnostic tests are used by the doctors to determine the staging of esophageal cancer. The main reason for doing the Esophageal Cancer Staging

is to know the state of cancer and also determine the kind of action required to be taken to treat the patient in the best manner. Some doctors even use the staging for predicting the prognosis of the patient. The tool used for describing the stage by the doctor is called as the TNM system. TNM is said to be an abbreviation where T stands for tumor, N stands for node and M stands for metastasis.

Esophageal Cancer Staging according to the tumor stages, cancerous cells spreading to the lymphatic system stages and metastasis (transportation of cancerous cells from the lymphatic system to various other body parts that are located even at a distance) are given below.

T1- In this stage the tumor is seen only in the esophagus lining.

T2- In this stage the tumor is seen even inside the muscle layers of the wall of the esophagus.

T3- In this stage the tumor has passed via the whole wall of the esophagus.

T4- In this stage the tumor would have affected even the tissues nearby.

NX- it might not be determined even by the doctors if the cells have extended even to the lymph nodes nearby.

N0-The cancerous cells might not have extended till the lymph nodes nearby.

N1- in this stage the cancerous cells would have extended till the lymph nodes nearby.

MX- it might not be determined by doctors if the cancerous cells have affected the nearby organs or not.

M0- this staging denotes that metastasis is not caused.

M1- denotes that metastasis is caused.

Esophageal Cancer Staging can also be classified according to the stage groupings as stage I – combination of T1, N0 and M0, stage IIA – combination of N0, M0, T2 or N0, M0, T3, stage IIB – combination of T1, N1, M0 or T2, M0, N1, stage III – combination of N1, M0, T3 or T4, Mo any N, stage IV – M1, any N, any T.

Even tumor grades are also used for describing tumor with the letter "G". This is in addition to TNM system. G1 is the grade where the tissue looks very much like the normal cells, G2 is the grade given for cells that look somewhat abnormal, G3 is the grade given for cells very abnormal and do not look like normal cells, g4 grade is given for cancerous cells look very similar and do not resemble in any way the normal cells.
