One of the most endearing dog breeds in the world today is the Chihuahua. Even though they’re small in size, they are intelligent and have the heart of a lion.
The history of the breed is shrouded in mystery. Mexico seems to be the birthplace, but there is some question of that. Unlike an Australian Cattle Dog or Chesapeake Bay Retriever, with their clear lineage, the small dog’s past remains a mystery.
There were a couple of breeds that were native to Mexico that may have been the little dog’s ancestors. While both of these ancient breeds, the Techichi and the Perro Chihuahueno, may have contributed to the Chi, there’s no clear documentation. In fact, there’s some evidence that suggests a European heritage. A picture by Sondro Boticelli that’s on display in the Sistine Chapel shows a small dog that looks like the modern day Chihuahua.
Regardless of their beginnings, the modern day breed can be a great choice for a canine companion. These little dogs are attitude personified. They can be affectionate, playful pets or fierce watchdogs and protectors. It may seem funny to think of such small dogs as watchdogs, but they are extremely protective of their love ones. In fact, three of them held a mountain lion at bay in a Southern California garage in 2009. Those are tough little dogs!
Besides ferocity, other characteristics include being very vocal, suspicious toward strangers and being territorial toward other dogs. This resentment of strange dogs can create a problem. Since they’re so small, virtually every other dog is larger than they are. This can lead to serious injury or death if the other dog calls their bluff and a fight ensues. Before that happens, the smart owner will pick up their feisty little dog.
In the home, Chihuahuas are generally very good with other pets. They aren’t usually cat chasers and they get along well with other dogs, once they’ve become familiar with them. This is a great way to see the playful, clown like nature of the little guys. There’s not much cuter than seeing your little dog playfully wrestling with the cat or another of the household’s dogs!
The small size of the Chihuahua makes them a good choice for apartment dwellers. Running around the house or apartment can provide them with adequate exercise. A moderate sized backyard can seem as large as a football field. This ability to exercise in a small space also makes them a good choice for anyone who isn’t able to lead an active lifestyle.
While it’s unknown if the breed originated in sunny Mexico, Mediterranean Italy, or points unknown, they do enjoy being warm. A patch of sunshine makes a perfect place for a nap. On a cold day, burrowing under a blanket or some other type of cover will fill the bill. Just be careful that you don’t accidentally sit or step on them. With a dog that size, it could be fatal!
With their quick intelligence, brave hearts, and playful natures, the Chihuahua should be on the short list of dog breeds considered when looking for your next dog.
