Most dogs can swim and most of them are easily attracted on the water. But just like humans, their swimming capability and ability vary greatly. There are some dogs too that can't swim or can only swim for a short distance. The reason why protecting your dog from water hazards is essential. Protect your dog from being a drowning victim when going to the beach or lakes and even at home.

Doing some preventive and safety measures will provide your dog utmost protection from potential hazards. It is better to do some preventive measures rather than having a dog that has become a drowning victim. Here are some safety tips to prevent your dog from being a drowning victim:

  1. When taking your dog on outdoor activities such as going to the beach or having a walk near the lake, always keep an eye on the dog. The dog might get in the water unattended because dogs are easily attracted to the water and they too love playing in it. They might drown in the water if left unattended especially when they get tired and don't know how to get out of there.

  2. There are times you can't watch your dog at home. At home, the risk of drowning is still present especially if you have pools in your backyard. Make sure to drown proof it. Install a safety fence and gate in the pool area to prevent the dog from getting in the water unattended. If you are not using the pool and have covered it with a pool cover, still prevent the dog from getting near the pool area for it might step on the cover which is not a steady surface.

  3. If you go swimming with your dog or just walking near the water areas, make sure that you have bought your dog a life jacket. This type of vest will give you peace of mind that the dog is safe from possible drowning. It will keep the dog afloat while in the water. The jacket must be of right fit for the size and length of the dog and must be of good quality. It should also be fastened correctly on the dog.

Doing some outdoor activities with your dog is an enjoyable experience. Being a dog owner, it is your responsibility to keep an eye on your dog and protect him from possible hazards.
