Before knowing about the treatment for vulvar cancer let us first see what is vulva and how they are susceptible to vulvar cancer. Vulva is nothing but the region comprising of outer and inner vaginal lips, vaginal opening and related glands, and sensitive tissues found between the vaginal lips called clitoris. Vulvar cancer is most often caused on the outer lips of the vagina and less often caused on the inner lips of the vagina or clitoris. The development of vulvar cancer is found to be slower and is found to advance over many years. Vulvar cancerous cells tend to grow over the vulvar skin surface for a long period of time. The condition that is precancerous to vulvar cancer is known as dysplasia or VIN or vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia.
There are various ways by which treatment for Vulvar cancer can be achieved. Some of the types of treatments for vulvar cancer are standard and are most often used presently and some are still in the testing stages and most often used during clinical trials. Four standard type of treatments that are used for treating vulvar cancer includes laser therapy, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
Laser therapy is the most used treatment option for vulvar cancer now. It makes use of a laser beam for destroying cancerous cells. Surgery is also commonly used as a treatment option for vulvar cancer. The main objective of surgery is to get rid of cancer without hindering the sexual function of women. Surgery can be further classified based on the way they are performed. Wide local exicision is a surgical procedure used for removing cancerous cells and few normal tissues present around cancer.
Radical local excision is a procedure used for removing cancer cells and more number of normal tissues surrounding it. Most often the cell near groin nearby the lymph nodes might be removed. Vulvectomy is another surgical procedure used for removing all or part of vulva. The procedure can be further sub-divided as skinning vulvectomy, simple vulvectomy, radical vulvectomy and modified radical vulvectomy. Pelvic exenteration is a surgery method used for removing the bladder, rectum, and lower colon. Along with them the ovaries, vagina and cervix might also be removed.
Chemotherapy is a treatment option where certain drugs are injected inside the body for destroying the cancerous cells and also for making the cancerous cells to stop dividing. Radiation therapy makes use of x-rays of high energy to destroy the cancerous cells. They can be classified into internal radiation therapy and external radiation therapy.
