One of the most common questions that is asked by those who are unsure about what they believe about God is "If God Created Us Then Who Created God?" While this question appears to be a valid one it is actually a completely invalid question, at least if we are referring to the God of the Bible. This is quite simply because if God were created then He would not be God. The Bible describes God as being eternal and without beginning or end. We will examine some of the scriptures relating to this topic to give us a better idea as to why this common question is invalid.

In the book of Genesis chapter 21 verse 33 we read: "Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the LORD, the Eternal God." We also read in Psalm chapter 90: "from everlasting to everlasting you are God." The Bible makes it extremely clear that God is eternal and had no beginning or end. It therefore follows that he does not have a creator but instead has always existed. As we look around at the properties of our universe we can conclude that our universe is not eternal. Our universe had a beginning or "first cause." God on the other hand, does not.

God, being eternal, also does not change. The bible describes Him as being "the same yesterday, today, and forever" in Hebrews chapter 13 verse 8. Our universe, on the other hand, experiences constant change. In fact, we use the concept of "time" to explain changes in matter. God is outside of time and space because He is the creator of it, and therefore He is not subject to its laws or affects. 2 Peter chapter 3 verse 8 states: "With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day." This is showing how God is not affected by time because He is eternal. There is no difference to God between a day and a thousand years.

It is obvious that we as created beings can not possibly understand the idea of being eternal. We have a thought process that changes constantly, God does not. We perform actions contained within time and space as well as experience the passing of time second by second. God however, does not. On the other hand, just because we can not fully understand or experience being eternal it does not mean that we can not understand the concept enough to affirm that the God who created all things is indeed eternal.

We must again point out that we are talking about the God of the Bible. The question of "Who created God" might perhaps have some sort of bearing on another so-called "god." However, when referring to the one true eternal and self-existent self-sustaining God of the Bible the question is not valid. So the next time someone asks this question the first thing you need to do is ask them to clarify what they are asking by making it clear which god they are talking about. If they are in fact asking about the God of the Bible then you should be quick to point out the error of their question. Put simply, if God were created He would not be God.
