Do you often wonder what type of dog food is best for your pooch? I, like many dog owners, am constantly asking my dog if it would rather the moist, canned type food or the dry dog food sold in large bags. Now, I realize that my dog can’t answer but I have a feeling it would choose the wet dog food just because it is more aromatic and naturally appealing to the dog’s palate than the dry kibble. As a responsible dog owner, what should I do?

Your dog’s health depends on the nutritional value of its food. Its food must satisfy its nutritional needs as much as possible, whether you feed it dry food or moist food. One thing to be aware of is that you get what you pay for when it comes to the quality of the dog food. Some cheaper brands and generic foods are made with low-quality and cheap ingredients. They contain more filler than nutrition. While, it will fill up your dog and satisfy its hunger, it won’t receive much benefit from it. Choose a dog food with high-quality ingredients in order to meet your dog’s nutritional needs.

I know of a few dog owners who use a mixed approach towards choosing their dog’s food. This approach involves being in the middle of the dry and wet dog food argument. They mix some dry food with the canned, wet dog food. This lets the owners off the hook and makes the dog happy too. However, it is important to remember to supplement in something the dog can chew and crunch in order to promote healthy teeth and gums. I recommend a bunch of chew toys or giving the dog some bones or biscuits that it can gnaw on.

As long as the dog has a good and safe way to work out its teeth, gums and jaw on a regular basis, then it really doesn’t matter if you feed it dry kibble or moist, canned food. If you are still feeling uneasy, ask your vet during your pet’s next appointment. They can examine the dog’s teeth and let you know if there are any issues that have to be corrected. This is commonly done by providing a special kind of food or a dietary supplement.

Selecting the correct dog food is an important decision for both the dog’s nutritional needs and proper dental health. If you would rather feed it the tastier, moist foods over dry kibble then that is just fine as long as it has something to provide its teeth some type of exercise.
