There is no specific cause for prostrate cancer. But the most commonly observed influences are old age, inheritance, hormonal effects, infections due to toxins and chemicals. People who are below 40 are less prone to prostrate cancer, but those who are above 80 are more prone. Almost 70-80% of the population in this age group are known to be affected by prostrate cancer.

Genetic Factors:

Inheritance plays a major role in causing prostrate cancer. The type of food consumed or the environment are also equally responsible for causing prostrate cancer. Prostrate cancer is more common in people who already have members infected in the family. Therefore, a person whose grandfather or uncle or father has already had prostrate cancer has a higher risk of developing prostrate cancer as compared to a person whose family is not affected. Inheritance is primarily due to genes that are located on chromosomes and which determine some qualities in individuals.

Hormonal Levels:

With respect to hormones, the male hormone testosterone, is responsible for the abnormal growth of the prostrate tissue and prostrate cancer cells. It is believed to be directly involved in causing and spreading of prostrate cancer.

Diet. Physical Fitness, the Environment and Tobacco:

With respect to diet and the environment, people who regularly smoke or consume tobacco or who eat food which is high in fats have a greater risk of having prostrate cancer. Other reasons which are responsible for causing cancer are exposure to sunlight, radiations, viruses, bacteria, consumption of alcohol, lack of physical activity and obesity.

One of the most recent studies reveals that eating specific types of food helps in prevention of prostrate cancer. Consumption of oily fish like salmon, tune or mackerel can help to prevent cancer. This is because the omega-3 and the omega-6 fats which are present in oily fish help to control the spreading of cancer to the other organs of the body.

Vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds also contain omega-6 fatty acids which help to control the spreading of prostrate cancer.

Diabetes is also known to reduce the risk of having prostrate cancer. This is because diabetes causes the insulin in the human body to decrease to a large extent and increased levels of insulin are known to cause prostrate cancer.

Selenium is also known to inhibit the growth of prostrate cancer. Selenium is known to kill the cells in the human body whose DNA is infected and thereafter, it slows down the growth of cancerous cells.

With respect to diet, eating of food which is low in fat, meat or dairy products or consumption of less fried, smoked, charred, salty, pickled or grilled food, an increased fiber intake can also help in preventing prostrate cancer.

Avoiding consumption of tobacco, exercising regularly, avoiding obesity or even consuming less alcohol and sweets can help to prevent prostrate cancer. Also, consuming soya bean, soya milk, tofu, tomato products like tomato sauce, retinal palmitate, gamma tocopherol, lycopene, vitamin D, parathyroid hormone or vitamin E is known to have reduced the risks of prostrate cancer.
