When it comes to training a dog or puppy, I’ve found that dog treats make the training so much easier to accomplish. They are a wonderful tool to use in helping the dog recall commands or to reinforce positive behavior. Proper training, especially the recall command, makes for one of the most important aspects of owning a pet. The recall command teaches the dog to come when called for and it should be one of the very first commands you should teach your pet.

The first step you need to take is to find the right type of treat for your dog. I personally preferred greenies dog treats for training my dog. They act as a motivator, so always use it to your advantage. Be sure to use a treat which is low in fat content and provides a few health benefits. You can also use dog biscuits and other treats like that because they can be broken into smaller pieces and this provides other benefits. It leaves you with seemingly more treats to give to the dog and in training you only want to reward them with small treats anyway.

Now that you’ve found the type of dog treats you’ll be using, you can now begin with the training. Remember to always be consistent and use your pet’s name as much as possible. In keeping with the idea of consistency, stick with one word and use it often. Try not to use other words during this training process as it will only confuse the dog. Also, do away with any other distractions. An empty room inside your home often works best, but if you have a quiet yard with other outside activity, then that would work just as well.

Call the dog to you. When the dog steps towards you, remember to offer a treat reward, so always have some dog treats in your pocket or in hand. This way you can reward your dog for doing the right thing. It is this positive reinforcement which sets the model for good behavior. Try not to give it a treat every time. Instead, mix in some praise as a reward.

The dog treats should now be causing the dog to understand and figure out how it can earn more of that tasty reward. Once the dog progresses in its training, you can then begin to add distractions to see how the dog reacts. As the dog better follows your commands, reduce the amount of treats, but still give the dog plenty of encouragement and praise.. Only reward more difficult successes, such as an actual recall when you gave the command.
