If it is a child’s first time to see a Bichon Frise, he or she might mistake it for a fluffy toy. To say that it is one of the most adorable dog breeds, is an understatement. This breed originated from the line of Water Spaniels or the Barbet. That is why Bichon is rightly a shorter version of "Barbichon". The Bichon’s history can be traced to the Mediterranean region.

Due to the Bichon Frise’s happy disposition, it was a popular companion of Spanish and Italian sailors. Sometimes, these pups can be a bit overexcited but generally, they belong to the category of affectionate and sensitive dog breeds. It is uncommon for these dogs to act out or show bad temperament during a tantrum. Apart from its cuddly appearance and luscious coat, its good nature was one of the main reasons why members of the Italian and French royals preferred them for pets during the 1400’s. The softness and inquisitiveness in its expression is well appreciated by many. Don’t worry if you don’t have a palace to offer this dog because although it might look like royalty, it doesn’t behave like a spoiled princess. Regardless of the size of the abode, whether you stay in a condominium unit or a spacious house; all the Bichon Frise needs is an open space where it can play daily to release stored energy.

For homeowners with children, socialize the Bichon early. They have the potential for being great playmates for kids. Many dog breeds can keep up with the high energy present in young children, this one including. Bichon Frises have a cheerful nature. Bichons are definitely not aggressive, but like any other dog that assumes it is challenged, an occasional nip can occur during play. That is why it is important to supervise kids in order to prevent bad handling which results to biting. When the Bichon Frise is always teased by removing toys during play and interrupted during meals, these naturally affectionate and feisty dogs can turn aggressive. Owners should be sensitive and kind in treating all dog breeds.

If you are looking for a companion dog, this is will live up to your expectation. Bichons like to have human presence around and they, do, suffer from separation anxiety. It is possible to leave your pet for a few hours a day but not for very long periods. Sometimes, Bichons can be stubborn but they are also very patient dogs. The good news is that separation anxiety can be corrected through obedience training.

Many owners appreciate the fact that the Bichon Frise can easily adapt to new places and even to people. These dogs also get along with other pets in the home as well.
