Well, it seems the issue of the HPV virus in men has hit the national spotlight. With the federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommending that pre-pubescent boys (ages 11 - 12) get the HPV vaccine, the topic has suddenly become very relevant to men in general.

The tricky thing here is that most boys, even into their early teens, are still not engaging in sexual activity. For the majority, it simply doesn't happen. The issue changes once they get to be around 15-16…but still. Moreover, the cancers that HPV can cause in men such as penile, anal or oral cancers are almost entirely associated with homosexual men…and not those who engage in heterosexual, vaginal or oral intercourse.

What makes the recommendation even more strange is the fact that HPV types are often referred to as "low-risk" (wart-causing) or "high-risk" (cancer-causing), based on whether they put a person at risk for cancer. In 90% of cases, the body's immune system clears the HPV infection naturally within two years. This is true of both high-risk and low-risk types.

Nevertheless, the strains of the HPV virus in men that cause Genital Warts are another story. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), up to 1% of all men in the U.S. have Genital Warts.

Thankfully, the HPV virus in men can be combated in a number of ways. Actually, most medications or remedies do not attack the virus itself. Instead, the symptoms such as Genital Warts are treated. Until recently, there weren't any remedies for the HPV virus in men at all.

If you're a man, or if you're a woman concerned about her man, then you should know the following.

Treating Genital Warts, an outward manifestation of particular HPV strains, can be done through surgical removal or they can be frozen off. There are also topical remedies one can purchase. The downside is that you still have the virus in your system and the warts can come back multiple times. That means more treatments.

The only truly badass way to get rid of the symptoms of HPV is to go after the virus itself and kill it with extreme prejudice. That's right…you gotta make war.

Now, two vaccines on the market combat various strains of the HPV virus in men. Of the two, only Gardasil is approved for men. There is also one broad-spectrum antiviral supplement (which also happens to be the only one on the market with any kind of published, scientific material on its ingredients) called Gene-Eden-VIR. The makers don't claim to kill the virus, but they do claim their product boosts your immune system and thereby helps your own body to lower the numbers of latent HPV you're trying to fight off.

The most badass way of fighting HPV is actually prevention. Keep yourself from acquiring it…and you don't have to worry about treating either the cause…or the symptoms.
