The Harmful Impact of Social Media Pages Specifically Targeting Men: Are We Dating the Same Guy?
In recent years, the rise of social media has significantly influenced how individuals interact, connect, and form relationships. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have undoubtedly made it easier for people to meet potential partners and share personal experiences. However, the emergence of social media pages dedicated to discussions around dating and relationships, particularly those that target men, may have unintended harmful consequences. One such example is the trend of pages asking, "Are we dating the same guy?"
These types of social media pages often feature anonymous submissions from individuals sharing their experiences with a particular man, detailing his behaviors, actions, and relationship patterns. While the intention behind these pages may be to create a space for solidarity and support among individuals who have faced similar mistreatment at the hands of a specific person, the impact on the men involved can be detrimental.
First and foremost, labeling and shaming men.
Falsely providing information that can cause not only emotional but physical harm.
Second what is the agenda behind why he is being posted?
Third, not every relationship is the same. A woman and a man will act differently not only as they grow but also depending on how they are being treated.
Last we assume that the men being posted have all done something to be posted so as we explore a new relationship we want to know what to look out for. Recently a woman posted about a man she had dated over 5 years ago the comments that later got posted had nothing to do with anyone currently dating this man but all were filled with hate and assumptions telling another woman to stay clear of him.
Women are posting intimate details, criminal records harmful hurtful things about men. Posting images of the men
Know I understand as a woman I should want to know if I am dating a man who is cheating or going to get physical with me. Yet that is not what is being done on this site. We have jealous ex-girlfriends posting anonymously to see if anybody’s dating their ex posting fake information stating that person was physical with them. Vilifying men. These women post their criminal backgrounds without any thought or idea if this person has serviced time has changed or what the was behind the charges. We all know some changes say one thing yet mean another thing. We have all seen how false accusations can still cause someone to have a criminal record. I have a past. I am judged for my past daily. I know the judgment I get because of my criminal history so I am honest and forthcoming about it. Also, I fear that anyone can look it up and assume they know who I am based on my history. Yet today if you see me I am a counselor with our youth teaching them why drugs are harmful. But if you look up my past you would think I am a horrible person. I understand that because of my past people have a right to judge me I got caught so everyone will always have access to my past. Yet how many women and men do not get caught but we trust them because they do not have a criminal record? A man who makes a mistake and is seen as a villain gets posted and he asks himself will I ever be able to meet somebody who won’t look at my past and assume I’m still that person? This site reminds me of the girls that harassed and caused harm to the other girls in high school and now they’re not doing it to the girls they’re doing it to the men that they feel have harmed them in some posts that they are not able to set good boundaries yet blame the man for not understand that was not what they wanted. Almost every post starts with What’s the red flag or the tea on this guy? The women aren’t trying to protect each other they’re trying to vilify these men and harm them just like the girls in school. That would post on social media about other girls, we don’t think that these men are going to be harmed because of this action but they are they have feelings just like we do. I read a quote once that stated everyone has red flags just which ones are you willing to live with?
I attempted to post on this site once my post was not allowed, I was so disgusted with some of the posts about men. I asked the women to think before they post what if the person being posted is their father brother or son? How would you want that person to post about them not saying that some of these men have not done horrific horrible things, but I do believe that some of the women on the sides are doing just as harmful and horrific and horrible things as these men are doing. Some people want to just move on with their lives and not be continually looked at as their past.
I haven't always made the best decisions, and I still fight to stay on track. However, I can honestly state that I have never set out to purposefully damage another individual. I've suffered with addiction and self-worth, and I'm one of the lowest-level criminals. Yet, now, I am two classes away from completing my master's degree in addiction therapy. I work with children, teaching them on the harm that narcotics cause not only to our bodies but also to our lives.
