Selecting A Husky Puppy Name - The Right WayHusky Puppy NamesChoosing your husky's name and using it correctly are two of the most important things that you can ever do for your dog. The genetically defined nature of huskies is what makes their name so important, possibly more important for them than it is for other dog breeds. What's in a name? From ancient days, deliberate care has been taken in choosing a name. Early civilizations believed that the name bearer gradually became the "essence" of the name. Have you ever met a person named "Shorty"? What default image appeared in your mind's eye the moment you read the name?Your husky deserves a name, or a way to describe her essence, that suits her personality AND creates behaviors you can be proud of. Believe it or not, a husky named "Moody Blues" (a sad name indeed) may be mischievous or simply ignore you altogether."To Be or Not To Be": Selecting the right name for your dogWhat are some of the basic tips for choosing a name that honors your dog, her heritage, and personality?1. Take some time to get to know your puppy. Whether you rescued a Siberian husky or waited for months to purchase a champion pup, take some time to enjoy the presence of your dog for a few days or more. Who is she when she plays? What is her energy level? How attentive is she to stimuli? What gets her "mojo" going? Your husky's personality is her own mark in the world and a wise human respects that gift.2. Choose a name that your entire family can pronounce without difficulty. For instance, if your household speaks English then a Chinese name for the dog will sound quite different when each family member calls her. Be careful not to get cute with rhyming names, especially if they sound like negatives. For instance: a husky dog sled owner won't be naming any of his dogs "Lush" - it sounds to much like "mush" and the consequences could be quite irritating!3. Have you seen the commercial where the guy comes home and upon opening the door says something like, "I am home Mr. Frisky Noodle Muffin." - His dog doesn't know if it's time for dinner or a hug. His name should be single or double syllables, but keep it to a minimum. Names like 'Frisky', 'Major' or 'Stripes' are far easier for the dog, than "Moony Beams" or "Chastity".4. How would you like to be called "Hairy Wiseman", only to go bald at age 33! Before you name your puppy "Furrball" or "Fluffy", consider the months when there is more hair on your couch than on her body! Get a name that suits your husky for life.5. Consider your husky's origin. Her ancestors came from a cold and rugged climate. Some owners enjoy this twist and name their pup "Snow" or "Miki"(An Alaskan name). Honor her roots, but don't forget the other basic guidelines for choosing the perfect name for your perfect husky."Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones…But names will never hurt me." You probably remember those taunting words from childhood. Actually, nothing is further from the truth - not for you, or your handsome husky.I remember my mother using my full name when I was in trouble: the first, middle, and last name in a certain tone. If I was outside playing and heard those three words streaming out the kitchen window, the last thing I wanted to do was go in the house! So think "husky" for a minute. Are you prone to associate your name with a positive experience if when you finally obey the recall command your master shouts "Siku, you stupid dog! Come to me when I call you." (Add to that a jerking drag on his leash and a "bad boy Siku" or "shame on you Siku") Would you willingly respond the next time, or run for the hills? Don't forget, your dog was bread for long arduous runs while pulling hundreds of pounds. It's in their DNA to run away and the last thing you want to do is encourage her! To properly teach your husky to "come" when you want her, she needs to associate the word with a positive experience. Use her name and a positive reinforcement every time she obeys your recall command. For instance:"What a good girl you are Siku!""Good come Siku, good come!"Praise her even if she did not come for the first few calls! Reinforce the good behavior. Use her name with verbal praise and maybe even a small treat. We Only Scratched the Surface This article merely introduces the importance of your husky's name.
