In the world ridden with selfishness and corruption where morality is taking a down curve a doze of righteousness has becomes imperative. The irony, however is that we are taking away our kids from the moral path by denying them the lessons on morality which should infact be the staple food for their impressionable minds.

Kids of today are growing up with an over-doze of cartoons which instead of teaching morality are ridden with violence and ill-willed characters. Adding to the junk in the minds of children are sci-fi video games that puts a restraint on the thinking mind of the child and puts a curb on their inherent creativity. Busy parents who themselves get glued to meaningless soaps at dinner time are forgetting the virtues of telling bed-time stories that are so much necessary for the positive growth of the child’s mind.

If your kid too is being fed a hotchpotch of today’s fast-track life where you as a parent are introducing them to ills of computer games and an excess of TV to make them ‘competitive’ with the other children, it is time you must think of giving your child a healthy food for mind!

A great way to give your child some healthy diet is to make them friends with the rich treasure of Indian mythology. Laden with morality, a touch of spirituality and virtues of sticking to a righteous path lessons in mythology is highly required in today’s time. Stories from Ramayana, Mahabharata have so many interesting episodes pertaining to the lives of Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, Lord Hanuman, Arjuna, Bhima and others teach kids about the value of hard work, doing good towards others, being respectful towards our parents, teachers and elders, the virtues of charity and social work in such an interesting manner that kids gradually imbibe these values in their life without getting the feeling of being preached.

Other stories from Indian mythology which must be a part of a kid’s mental diet include stories of Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, Sai Baba, Lord Buddha, interesting stories of Vikram Betal, Akbar Birbal, Jataka tales, Tenali Rama, the life of Lord Shivaji etc.

The best way to teach your kids about mythology is to tell them stories yourself when the kids are small, buy them comics when are learning to read, get them story books on mythology when they are growing and get them Indian mythology VCDs and DVDs when they feel that books are not that interesting in this electronic age! Well, whatever is your kid’s choice the idea is to maintain their touch with the rich Indian heritage and culture and give them a nutritious diet that ensures the wholesome growth of their mind and overall personality!
