Miniature Dachshunds were originally bred in Germany to hunt hares. Often described as ‘two dogs long and half a dog high’, they don’t grow more than 5 to 10 inches high and usually weigh between 10 to 12 pounds. Miniatures have the same short legs and muscular long body so characteristic of standard Dachshunds.

Lively, loyal and affectionate, Miniature Dachshunds are easy to train and enjoy showing off in the ring. True to their hunting nature, they are very courageous, and enjoy burrowing into the earth in search of prey! Like all Dachshunds, Miniatures have independent personalities and need firm handling from an early age. They enjoy being with families and can make great companions, but must be socialized to be with children and other pets.

Miniature Dachshunds are available for prices ranging from $100 to $2,500, and like all dog breeds, need regular grooming and lots of loving attention. They come in many colors and can be smooth-haired, longhaired, or wire-haired. Routine brushing will keep their coats in good condition, but bathing them too often will dry out the skin and coat. While longhaired dachshunds require daily brushing, a damp cloth is enough to clean the smooth-haired variety.

Dachshunds love to eat and tend to put on weight quickly. A constant check on their diet is required to prevent straining their delicate spines. In fact, all Dachshunds are prone to back injuries and immense care must be taken when they are picked up or carried about. Miniature Dachshunds need plenty of exercise for proper physical and mental development, especially if they are confined to the house during the day. The dogs will enjoy a walk around the block or a romp in the garden where they can also take care of their business. Make sure that they do not leap up or jump from heights, however, because that can lead to injuries.
