Situated near the Tropic of Capricorn, Mauritius has the advantage of a subtropical climate. The climate is fairly acceptable to everyone and the heat is never unbearable. Car hire can really help you to get the most from your trip to Mauritius.
Botanical Garden of Pamplemousses
The famous Pamplemousses Garden, ranking among the finest botanical garden, in the world, was established in 1735 by Mahè de Labourdonnais, with Mon Plaisir Castle once his residence. The 60-acre garden boasts 500 different species of plants, of which 80 are palms. Of particular interest are the giant water-lilies, a spice garden and the Talipot Palms, said to flower every 60 years after they die.
Casela Bird Park
The Casela Bird Park, a beautiful garden and bird sanctuary of some 25 acres, is situated in the west part of the island Mauritius near the small village Flic en Flac. Almost 2500 birds of 140 differnet species are housed in some 90 aviaries. For example the Mauritian Pink Pigeon, one of the rarest birds in the world, can be seen here. Casela also houses other animals such as tigers, monkeys, lemurs, deer and giant tortoises, etc. Its natural setting, spacious layout and luxuriant vegetation als helps to make it a popular spot.
Domaine du Chasseurs
At Anse Jonchée in the south-east, high in the hills overlooking Vieux Grand Port Bay, lies the private land of the Domaine du Chasseur. It consists of 3000 acres of tropical forest inhabited by hundrets of javanese stags, wild boars, monkeys and thousands of birds, among which is the nearly extinct Mauritian kestrel. This enchanting place is a must for hunters and nature lovers.
