You should not ignore any pain in your abdomen. Consulting a doctor or medical examination is needed. Serval different conditions can cause the ovarian pain.

Cause of Ovarian Pain: Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts are small fluid-filled sacs that develop in a woman’s ovaries. Most cysts are harmless, but some may cause problems such as rupturing, bleeding, or pain. They are very common in women, especially during the childbearing years. Ovarian cysts affect women of all ages. The vast majority of ovarian cysts are considered functional. In other words, they have nothing to do with disease. Most ovarian cysts are benign, meaning they are not cancerous, and many disappear on their own in a matter of weeks without treatment. Ovarian cysts usually cause no symptoms. They can, though, create a dull ache or a sharp pain if one twists or ruptures.

Hemorrhagic cysts are a type of functional cyst, meaning that they occur normally during the course of the female menstruation process. Functional cysts, also known as simple cysts, have nothing to do with disease. A corpus luteum cyst is typically round and fluid-filled, with size from 2cm to 6cm in diameter. In some cases, its diameter is larger. Most corpus luteum cysts will have no symptoms. A ovarian dermoid cyst is a tumor in the ovary, usually benign. Ovarian dermoid cyst typically contains a diversity of tissues. Ovarian dermoid cysts are also called simple ovarian cysts.

Cause of Ovarian Pain: Ovarian Tumors

Tumors can form in the ovaries, just as they form in other parts of the body. They can be either noncancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant). A benign ovarian tumor is a noncancerous growth on or inside an ovary. It is a solid mass, not a fluid-filled cyst. It is called benign because the abnormal cells in the growth do not spread to other parts of the body.

Cause of Ovarian Pain: Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection in the ovaries, uterus, or fallopian tubes. Infection spreads upward from the cervix to the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and surrounding structures. It is most often caused by sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea or chlamydia. It is one of the most common causes of pelvic pain in women. Sexually active women younger than 25 years are at greatest risk, although PID can occur at any age.
