Great Lakes are popular tourist destination around the United States of America. They are widely located east of North America and the part of the Canada – United States perimeter. These great lakes are a prime group of freshwater lakes where the largest fresh water system of the earth can be found.
It has a total land area of 95,000 square miles. They are also called the Inland Seas by the locals near the area. Great Lakes is considered the land of natural treasures because they inhibit all the natural treasures that the place describes.
The Great Lakes is composed of five bodies of water. These are Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, Lake Erie, Lake Huron and Lake Ontario.
The great lakes originated at the end of Pleistocene period. It was the time where lake basins had lots of melted waters from ice sheet carved by glaciers. The glaciers were named the Lauren tide. This was formed centuries ago and it covers all over the United States. But for many years, geological changes happened that causes the Lauren tide to retreat and melt. This results to the formation of the Great Lakers which are the above mentioned lakes.
The region of great lakes includes so many states. These states include the borders of Canada. The Great Lakes have a wealth of natural splendor that makes most of United States’ prime tourist spots. They have a flora and fauna scattered all over the region. They offer lots of outdoor sports that will invite the visitors to happy yet challenging physical activities.
For visitors not fond of physical activities, there are so many casual encounters in the cities that surround the Great Lakes. The perimeters are a good mix of great shopping areas, nice view for sightseeing, live concerts and opportunities to meet lots of people of different races.
The Great Lakes also has so many attraction areas. One of the most favorite is the Shipwreck Museum. This museum was built in 1986 by a group of divers who have studied all the wrecks in the water. This group was called the Great Lake Shipwreck Historical Society. They opened this museum to commemorate the perils and heroism of all the marines who have braved the Great Lakes.
The Society was also responsible for sustaining a beautiful lighthouse which is the Light Tower at Whitefish Point. This lighthouse symbolizes the People and Guest of Michigan.
The Museum is at the site of the lighthouse stated above. The museum has all the legends of the shipwrecks that have come to life. There are lots of artifacts and exhibits about the lost shipwrecks.
A famous exhibit that is presented in the museum is the Edmund Fitzgerald memorial. This features the ship that was named the Ship Bell. The legend of this ship has been very famous. It has been mysterious and controversial compared to all tales of shipwreck in the Great Lakes. This happened in November 10 of 1975. This shipwreck has constituted the story of the famous file Titanic.
The museum is just some of the things offered in the Great Lakes. There are many more that a visitor can enjoy. It also has great trails for hiking or mountain biking. The great water of the lakes offers more than just a view. They have healthy sea creatures like fishes that people would love to catch. Swimming can also be possible in the nearby swimming pools or beaches. The most important thing is on winter, where in people would crowd the places to go for skiing.
