Niagara Falls is arguably the most famous attraction in all of Canada. Over 14 million people visit each year to take in the awe-inspiring power and majesty of the falls. There is much to do in and around Niagara Falls, making it an excellent vacation destination.
The falls themselves are over thirteen stories high, creating an explosion of free falling water that surprises many visitors with its sheer intensity. Several attractions take you up very close to the water. A boat excursion called Maid of the Mist ventures up to the base of the falls, while a tunnel called Journey Behind the Falls descends through 150 feet of rock to emerge into an area directly behind the falls.
There are other attractions near the falls themselves. These include a walking path along the white water rapids and an aerial cable car that crosses above the river on six large cables. Both of these are located upriver from Niagara Falls itself. Also nearby is an interactive butterfly conservatory where visitors can touch and hold several different species of butterfly.
The surrounding Niagara region is known for fine cuisine and fine wines. There are over fifty wineries nearby and many exceptional restaurants as well. Many tourists are surprised at the historical aspects of Niagara, including archaeological features from the native Iroquois tribe and historical features from the earliest European explorers in the area.
Niagra Falls has kid-friendly features, too, including water parks, theme parks, miniature golf, and outdoor activities. There is even an aquarium in the area featuring marine life such as beluga whales and hundreds of species of fish. Many hotels offer family travel packages that include accommodations, local attractions, and other activities.
The fastest growing industry at Niagara Falls is weddings. There are many scenic locations in and around the actual falls, with an abundance of wedding specialists to help couples plan and arrange every detail of their nuptials. Whether a couple wants a place to elope or to hold a large formal wedding, Niagara Falls is bound to have a suitable chapel, park, hotel or other memorable location.
The nearest airports to Niagara Falls are in Toronto, Ontario, and Buffalo, New York. Most visitors fly into one of these facilities and then rent a car, hail a taxi, or take a shuttle bus to their Falls destination. There is also passenger train service directly to Niagara Falls.
