Approach with Caution

OK, so you've got a new chat up line you want to try out on a new chick you've seen walk into the bar. STOP! Before you even consider walking over there and saying a pick up line like "Shall we talk or continue flirting from a distance" you need to be sure of a few things:

  • Does she look like she's with another man? Is there a ring on her finger, is she with girls or is she alone?

  • How confident are you that you have a chance? Being optimistic is one thing, but if she's clearly out of your league then you'll risk making yourself look a fool in front of other potential girlfriends!

  • Does she look around your age? If not, then think twice before strolling over there.

Confidence

The single (yes, even more so than your looks!) most important factor as to whether you will win the girl (or boy, if that's your taste) is how confident you are. I'm sure you've heard it before, whether in the dating context or not; if you don't believe you can win the girl then why should she want you?

You need to get the balance right between walking over to her with a quiet confidence, and walking over looking like a complete idiot blurting out "Get your coat on baby; you've just pulled". Yes that screams 'confidence', but it also screams 'arrogant fool'.

Avoid Silly Chat Up Lines

If you must blurt out a chat up line, make sure it's funny and obvious so that she realises you're having a joke. Nothing could damage your chances more if you say a chat up line and you're being serious (very cheesy!).

On the other hand, coming out with a funny chat up line (or you think it's funny) like "Are you free tonight, or will it cost me?" might just offend her!

Be sure to test some out on your friends and I'm sure you'll find the right one!
