When a person reflects on his or her life, they see key events marking each phase: passing their driving test, getting their diploma, getting married and having kids. The same way, a faithful Catholic looks back and sees the reception of each of the Sacraments as milestones. As Catholic readers, we can also divide our spiritual timelines with influential books we have read, as the knowledge we gained from the pages shaped us into who we are today--and, continue to shape who we will become tomorrow.

Catholic Books and Gifts suggests this regimen of books pertinent to every age group, from nine- to ninety-year-olds. Hopefully these suggestions will help the reader grow in faith, in whatever part of their lifetime.

Early Childhood: Adapted Bible Stories

It is essential to read to our young children from an early age. It prepares them for formal education through developing communication skills and providing an activity that stimulates the imagination. What better book to use than adapted stories from the Bible! Our Bible is filled with memorable figures and epic adventures--stories that young children will enjoy and remember--and, these stories have wholesome lessons that provide a solid foundation for their growth in faith.

Late Childhood: The Lives of the Saints

By now, children begin to read independently and develop their own identity. This is the time they go to First Communion, becoming fully received into the Catholic Church. Stories on the lives of the Saints are great reading material. These titles were written for beginner to intermediate readers and contain enjoyable biographies of the prominent faithful, to serve as inspirations and examples of Christian living. Very soon, the child will have his or her own favorite--their patron saint!

Recommended: The Little Flower, by Mary Fabyan Windeatt ($11.00, under Youth Books)

Teenagers: Apologetics

When teenagers receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, they are considered adults by the Church. They can make decisions for themselves in terms of their faith. It is vital that our teenagers thoroughly comprehend what and why they believe, to be educated on the truths of Catholicism on a mature level. Nearing adulthood, they will be faced with many questions that will shake their foundations--apologetics will give answers from a reasoned and logical vantage.

Recommended: Ask the Bible Geek, by Mark Hart ($10.99, under Apologetics)

Young Adults: Discernment of Vocations

Getting ready to graduate from college, the young adult wonders what's next. A career, marriage, a family? Religious life? This is when one realizes God has a plan for them, and all along they had been guided by Him to this very crossroads. But, they will need help in uncovering exactly where that call is leading them--the discernment of their vocation. These guides will help sort through life and the Lord's messages to find that one true path.

Adults: Parenthood

As a married couple, husbands and wives are charged to multiply the people of God. But the same can be applied to those consecrated to the religious life--all are called to increase the glory of God in their respective vocations. With that come the joyful burdens associated with parenthood. Where husband and wife are responsible for raising children in the Church, so too are the shepherds who lead the flock. Parenting guides consistent with the Church's teachings are priceless.

Recommended: Amazing Grace for Fathers, by Cavins, Pinto, and Armstrong ($13.99, in Family Books)

Seniors: The Next Life

When we finally face our Lord, we hope to hear Him say, "Well done, good and faithful servant! Come and share your master's happiness!" (Matthew 25:23). As one approaches the end of their life, one is curious about what awaits them in the next. Sacred Scripture provides many descriptions of the Heaven set aside for us--and, there are many books considered insightful on what to expect when God calls us home.
