Collecting objects is a hobby many people enjoy. One of the most common things people hunt for are rare coins. Collectors have sought after different types of coins for a number of reasons.
Pleasure
For some, the joy of adamantly seeking out a single object for long periods of time and the rush of excitement that comes with a good find are reasons enough to collect something. Or perhaps the pleasure comes from the enjoyment of having an idle hobby or spending long hours roaming beaches and fields with a metal detector in search of something meaningful.
History
Some collectors are attracted to collecting for the history or background associated with the item. If there is a fond memory attached to mintage date, or even to the object itself, then one may decide to form a small collection based on their past experiences. There may even be an attraction to a historical figure featured on the coin that draws the collector in.
Potential Profit
As with anything of value, there will always be a market to sell the wares. Coins especially receive significant attention due to the high appreciation some attain in a relatively short amount of time.
A combination of the pleasure of owning something that is rare and in demand and the money to be made from selling said item is one of the more prominent reasons for collecting.
Meaningful Hobby
Gold coins are a favorite to collect because of the possible high payout later on. The price a coin can be sold for will vary according to the value it holds at the time. Gold coin values are affected by a few different factors, such as the current market value of gold and rarity of the collectibles. Grade or quality and the age of the coin also account for increased interest in gold coins as opposed to other types.
As the gold market fluctuates, so does the amount collectors will pay for gold coins. Coin values, both gold and not, change depending on the year they were made and the number of coins minted that year. Another factor is the mint they were produced in. Generally speaking, the less there are of a certain mint, the faster the appreciation, but this is not always the case. Grade or quality is dependent on many things, but most notably whether a coin is uncirculated (new) or circulated (used) and the degree of wear and tear it has suffered.
There are other reasons people take up this hobby, but each is as individual as the specific object being sought after.
