Speaking to you as a business consultant and marketing specialist, I am often asked what the difference is between web design and marketing. The answer is quit simple. Marketing is the process by which a prospect is brought to purchase a product or service. Web design is simply the process of making a website.

So why does this matter?

When you search the internet for someone to build a website for you, you will find thousands and thousands of web designers. These are people who went to school to learn how to make a website. The problem is that most of these designers have no idea about how to sell a product online, they don’t know principles of copy writing and they don’t know how to influence people to take action now and buy your product.

This is where a marketer comes in. Many business owners contact website designers thinking that all they have to do is build a website and the rest will take care of itself. Any true web marketer will know much better then that and realize that you have to:

Develop a message about your company/product that’s unique and compelling (USP)

Build a site about that product/service

Drive visitors to that page

Tweak your site in order to convert as many visitors into leads/sales

There is a science to this process that most web designers simply know nothing about. The problem is that for commerce, these designers help you build a site under the pretenses that you are going to earn money from this site, but the sad reality is that most of these sites go unvisited and under-utilized.

If you want to earn money from your website, make sure you find out if your designer knows about the marketing aspects of the business as well because if they don’t , chances are you aren’t going to get the success that you anticipate with your website.
