While some people find writing is as simple and natural as breathing, just having good work doesn't mean that it will be published, especially if you are unfamiliar with the publishing field. Some authors manage to find themselves agents to peddle their work for them to publishers, but there are many more independent authors and aspiring authors who hunt for publishers themselves.

Finding a publisher for your written work by yourself means you know everything humanly possible is being done for your creation. As for getting an agent, they will only sign on with you if they truly believe your work can make them a profit. An aspiring author of a soon to be published manuscript should at least know something about how publishing works.

If you have the time, patience, and will to learn all there is to know about publishing, then find work at a publishing company would be the first step. If you prefer something less solid and can afford to, try an internship or do volunteer work. This will at least get your foot in the door of publishing and provide the information needed for future publications. Just by being in a publishing-related workplace gives you a chance to introduce yourself to key people who make the publishing world go round. Chat up these people, make friends and learn all that you can from them. When you know how it works, you know what they want then you can write for the market. If you are able to, write a piece of work that is better suited for one of the genres that are in high demand, since this will give you a greater chance of being selected, printed and promoted.

One thing to remember is the publishing industry is notorious for flipping idealists into cynics. If you do not want to become an insider and prefer to remain the optimist author, then keeping your presence light and airy is best. Industry insiders transform to the opposing values and compromise objectives, which remain with them in the end. Just like all business, the publishing world sees values and objectives in a fluid manner for profit.

A writer is unable to write with any heart if all they do is write for profit. Prior to becoming an industry insider, most of them were once idealistic writers and loved books from a young age, but once the cold hard truth or profit was understood, everything changed.

The reality of it is that publishing would die without a profit, and a publisher understand that someone must see to it that our books get published. Though getting your manuscript to a publisher is no easy task, it is important to try and balance the author and sales person within to get your work noticed.
