The purpose of a nameserver is to allow your domain name to resolve to the current website, and with most hosting packages you will receive two of these. One of the biggest problems with this however is that upon moving your site, if you ever choose to do so, you will find that you cannot take your nameserver with you. What you could do however is create your own nameservers so that your content will remain concurrent.

In addition to allowing more customization, hosting your own nameserver for your domain names, even with free domains will allow you to maintain a website without allowing others to know what hosting company you use. In addition to that, hosting your own nameserver will actually make your company appear larger than it really is, which is always a plus in the business world. Before you get too excited though, you should know that there are a few steps to undertake before you can begin hosting your own name server, and they are typically the following:

DNS Software: This is a must. If you do not have DNS software such as a VPS or VPN installed, then you will not be able to host a nameserver. There is a strong chance that your hosting company will actually allow you to do this however, making the entire thing a moot point. Make sure you check with your hosting company ahead of time!

Root Access: This is a bit much to ask most hosting companies, but you will need to make sure you have root access before you can move forward with your plans. The majority of hosting companies will not allow you root access, but there are some that may be willing to work with you on this, especially if you are running a dedicated box in their server farm. It's not a guaranteed success, but it is certainly something to look in to.

IP Addresses: Having two IP addresses available will be mandatory, and you can actually purchase extra IP addresses from your hosting company. Make sure you ask about this option, and of course make sure that the options they present to you are cost-effective. In addition to that it would be a good idea to start thinking about a custom name for your nameserver. You will of course need to create a subdomain, and that subdomain will point to your nameserver.

As far as the creation of the nameservers goes, you can usually set this up within the control panel on your dedicated server. Make sure you work out the details with your host as they may have information that will make the process go much quicker. That being said, now might be a good time to speak with your hosting company and see what options are available to you.

It might seem like a lot of work, though with a bit of reading and a willingness to learn, the majority of the difficulty will be curbed, and you will actually have a rather nice setup experience. That being said, it's time for you to get busy creating your name server and building a standalone reputation for yourself. It might be a lot of work, but it will be well worth it in the end.
