Whether to build a minisite or authority website all depends on what you want to accomplish with it. Search engines understandably want to provide solid and good content to the people who represent their customer base. (Even though Google's massive profits are mainly derived by pay per click advertising.) Nevertheless, each individual online business owner needs to implement their business strategies according to what they believe it appropriate. You can certainly restrict yourself to minisites, but just aware that you will not have as many options enjoyed by having a more eclectic approach to site creation. On the other hand, promoting an authority website, or blog, will give the owner more freedoms and flexibility. But yes, you can still find ways to make good money by only using minisites.

Some people prefer to build mini sites because they want to start making money as soon as possible. This strategy can be effective. You can overlook the bigger picture, though, if you focus solely on fast profits. One approach would be to break down a niche into many micro niches, based on careful keyword research. You could then put up a dozen or more mini sites, each based on one of these micro niches. If this is properly planned, you could have several sites that rank well for your chosen words. Don't forget, though, that Google is not very fond of this strategy. Most successful Internet marketers agree that there are lots of strong reasons to work on building authority websites. It's also handy that Google is reinforcing this particular trend. But there are also plenty of other benefits for the bigger sites with regards to marketing as well as SEO. The authority site tends to be easier to promote using a wide variety of methods including backlinking. Other webmasters are often happy to link to authority sites containing plenty of good quality unique content, which gives you more backlinks.

One clear advantage of authority sites is the ability to begin ranking for different keyword phrases than you expected. It's possible to get your site ranking very well for synonyms of your chosen keywords and phrases as well. When you see this occurring, you could choose to exploit those alternate keyword options to raise your rankings even more. You can analyze those synonyms on their own merits or you can expand them to uncover other keywords and phrases. This tends to happen with plenty of established authority websites. However, it does take time for those rankings to show up.

Overall, you can't make a simple judgment about whether a mini site or an authority site is better. It can be tempting to make all your internet marketing decisions based on Google's preferences. You can't really ignore Google, of course, but it also makes sense to implement tactics that don't depend on this one company as well. But that is merely our learned opinion based on experience.
