Lake Austin is located in the western part of the city of Austin, in Travis County, Texas. It was formerly known as Lake McDonald and is one of the most beautiful artificial lakes in the region. Lake Austin was created when the Austin Dam (eventually replaced with Tom Miller Dam) was built on the Colorado River in 1893. It is just downstream from Lake Travis, another stunning Highland Lake in the Texas Hill Country. Both Lake Austin and Lake Travis are also used for local electricity generation. Lake Austin was created because of the construction of the dam, which was built for flood control of the Colorado River. Lake Austin has become a symbol of safety and security in terms of flood prevention in the Central Texas area.
Lake Austin has a capacity of nearly 21,000 acres and is involved in the production of electricity for several nearby counties. This lake is one of the six dam projects on the Colorado River. It has a surface area of 1830 acres and a spillway crest elevation of nearly 493 feet above sea level. Lake Austin winds nearly 22 miles and stretches from Tom Miller Dam to Mansfield Dam. A number of developments, including various housing projects and hotels have gone up over the last few decades. Lake Austin definitely plays an important role in the influx of tourists of Austin. The beautiful shoreline, pristine waters and safe environment assures a quality recreational area for tourism.
Lake Austin is not just a spectacular lake with great natural beauty, but it also provides extensive recreational opportunities for residents and tourists. Spend a day on the shores of the lake reading a book or go fishing or boating, or even plan a picnic lunch in the middle of the lake on a pontoon boat. There are many opportunities to enjoy water sports like jet skiing and swimming. In fact, one of the most unique boat rental companies in the area, Makin Waves Watercraft Rentals, is right on the lake, and you can rent boats, pontoons, water skis and so forth at very reasonable prices. And the best part about it is that you do not have to go to the rental shop. Makin Waves Watercraft Rentals will actually deliver the boat to you on one of the landings on Lake Travis or Lake Austin.
