Numbers don't lie. When taking even a brief look however, at the national estimate of missing children in the United States in any given year, the truth may be too much to bear. According to statistics published in October of 2002 by The U.S Department of Justice, "797, 500, children (younger than 18) were reported missing in a one year period of time studied resulting in an average of 2,185 children being reported missing each day". One of the major preventative measures taken by the US Department of Justice to help curb this epidemic was the development of the Amber Alert. In conjunction with the U.S Department of Transportation, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and law enforcement agencies across the nation, the Amber Alert has successfully recovered 389 children since its inception in 1997. In spite of this great achievement, the search for missing children continues for many families. There is still much to be done in order to ensure the protection of America 's youth. One of the latest inventions to appear on the market of child security devices, the Amberwatch, just may be the key instrument America needs for its ongoing battle against child abduction. And JustFundraising.com, a New York based fundraising company, has emerged as one of its major distributors. In fact, it holds exclusive rights over the retailing of Amberwatches as a fundraising product. Amberwatches are digital watches that have a built in alert system. At the click of a couple of buttons, owners of the watch can emit an ear piercing, 115 decibel distress signal if they find themselves in a dangerous situation. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, 115 decibels is louder than a lawn mower, motorcycle, chainsaw or an IPod used at a maximum level. With this kind of volume intensity, Amberwatches have the ability to get the attention of onlookers standing up to a football field away. They retail for $29.95 and come in 5 different trendy styles, including an original Aly and AJ series design. Jolian Grant, president and owner of Justfundraising.com, was determined to complete a two fold task when he began looking for a new product to add to the company's repertoire in the summer of 2006; "Our company was looking for a new, cutting edge product idea that had the ability to do two things: raise as much money as possible for fundraising groups while carrying out the equally important job of giving back to the community in a positive way. The Amberwatches, I think, fulfill both of these objectives rather well since they offer fundraisers a great way to raise funds and their supporters a device that could potentially save them from harm". As the father of a three-year-old son, Grant is especially driven to promote the product so that JustFundraising.com can do its share in lessening the threat of child abduction; "I don't know how I would react if I found my son missing one day. It's hard to even conceive of such a thing. Offering the Amberwatch program as one of our fundraising options just might save many families from having to deal with this terrible possibility". T'N'T Tumbling, an Oklahoma based gym devoted to the training of young cheerleaders and providing occupational therapy to special needs children, is just one example among the many groups that have benefited greatly from JustFundraising.com's Amberwatch fundraiser. Back in March of 2007, Trudy Taylor, her son Tyler and their good friend and fundraising enthusiast Wenona Nelson, raised thousands of dollars for T'N'T. The proceeds of their Amberwatch fundraiser were used to cover travel and uniform expenses for a cheerleading camp attended by 24 female hopefuls in Garden City, Kansas . The inspiration for their campaign on the other hand, was not solely based on raising much needed funds; just a few weeks prior to launching their campaign, a young girl in their neighbourhood of Liberal, was kidnapped. The teenager was found in New Mexico , a week later, after having escaped the grip of her abductor and receiving help from local residents. In light of such a nerve racking incident, the T'N'T crew decided to use their fundraiser as a vehicle for promoting awareness and cutting the menacing problem of child abduction down to size. According to Tyler Taylor in a 2007 interview with JustFundraising.com's copywriter, "It's all about the kids. Our goal to society is to make sure kids, all kids, do not get abducted. Therefore, we must make education a key focus. By selling these watches we will make parents aware of the fact that child abduction is real". The reality of child abduction requires that we remain alert and vigilant. With the help of services like Amber Alert and products like Amberwatch, we now have the tools to help stabilize or even decrease the overwhelmingly high number of children that disappear every day.
