Have you wondered how you might display a large scale model train set? Would you just love to be able to set it up so that you can get around the table to some of the harder to reach areas? If these are some things that you have thought about then you might want to consider making your own model train building table. A table like this will allow you to do the work you need to while allowing you to get the sort of display that will make you proud to share it with others.

When you first start to do your planning for your train table you should take all your variables into account. It should be able to fit into the space you have chosen but you should also consider some other things as well. You will want to make sure that you can easily get to windows to open and close them so you get proper ventilation. You also need to make sure that there are plenty of electrical outlets within reach.

Using drop cords or extension cords for long periods of time can be very dangerous so you really need to avoid them if it is at all possible. You will not want to build your table over any heating vents. This can cause heat to build under your table and can cause some major damage. It can cause adhesives to let go as well as damaging electrical equipment. Next you will need to consider what sort of top you will need.

If you will be working in a room with a smaller doorway you can cut everything into sections so that they are much easier to get through the tight spaces. Another thing you will want to consider is whether you will need to be able to access your table from the center. If you do then you can actually build trap doors into the table top that will open down allowing you to add detail on the top and still be able to get through to reach the parts you need to work on.

The next thing you will want to consider is your table legs. You can either build your own table legs or you can purchase pre-made ones from a home supply store. Buying your own can be easier but building your own can allow you to add as much support as you will need. You should also consider the height. It is best to make sure your legs are at least twenty eight inches high so you will not have to stoop too much. It is also a good idea to brace your legs so they can support the weight they will have to carry.

Make all your measurements and write them down. This list can help you greatly when you go to purchase your lumber as the sales people at many home supply stores can work from this list and fill your wood order for you based on your instructions. Also, when you go to attach your parts together you will want to use screws rather than nails. Screws can handle a much higher load than nails and will help your table to last a lot longer.
