Putting together a dissertation is a proof of maturity and knowledge. Finding the right topic is an essential aspect and while there are many people to whom the topic just comes naturally, most students have to think long and hard before making a final decision. The topic lies at the core of the dissertation, allowing one to build the thesis from just one subject area. One cannot write a dissertation thesis if the chosen subject is not interesting enough, so make sure you select a topic that actually draws your attention.
You may have chosen an interesting topic, but it can be of no use if you do know how to present the gathered ideas in a logical manner. When writing your dissertation, you want to concentrate on the subject so that the reader clearly understands your message. Organize your ideas and demonstrate that you can be both concise and coherent. Do not stray from the topic, plan the structure of your dissertation with your adviser and research the subject thoroughly. Bring arguments to the chosen topic, develop an outline of the main ideas and always try to put yourself in the reader´s place. Would you be interested in reading this dissertation? The answer to this question will help a lot when it comes to making the necessary improvements.
Another key point to consider is related to the actual length of the dissertation. It is a known fact that both the introduction and the conclusion should not occupy more than a third of the thesis. You have complete freedom when it comes to deciding how long each section should be but there are of course certain general guidelines you have to follow. The length of each paragraph is even more important to consider if there is a word limit set for the dissertation. You will also have to think about the deadline, making sure that you do not fall behind on your work and that the dissertation is completed on time.
Writing a dissertation thesis takes a lot of time and working without a plan will only lead to problems. Organize a plan and stick to it no matter what. You can take short breaks but it is for the best that you keep working on each section of the thesis until you manage to finish it. Free yourself from distractions and select a place to work that is quiet, without interruptions or continuous noise. What happens if you simply run out of ideas? Revise what you have written so far, do some more research and get some air. The ideas will come running to you in no time.
Dissertation thesis should contain the following points:
-
A cover page where you can find the title of the thesis, brief description and name of the student
-
Table of contents that includes the principal sections
-
Abstract (summary or synopsis)
-
Main body (presented chapter by chapter)
-
References and conclusion
-
Glossary of terms.
