Waikiki – A Popular Vacation Destination

Waikiki is pronounced as ‘waiki’-‘ki’ and is in the neighbourhood of Honolulu on the southern shore of the Oahu Island, Hawaii. In the Hawaiian monarchy days, the Hawaiian Royalty maintained the beach houses along the coastline running approximately 2miles on the Oahu Island and this was named as Waikiki or Spouting water.

The land was flooded with heavy rains as it swelled Manoa and Palolo streams. But in the 1920, a canal namely, Ala Wai was dredged and the springs, marshes and ponds of today came into being. It is actually a peninsula jutting from Kapiolanipark, Ala Wai Canal and Pacific Ocean on the southeast, east to northwest and west respectively. There are some of the most beautiful and luxurious hotels along the Kalakaua Avenue which runs along the entire length of Waikiki.

Waikiki has the best suitable climate and is a hot and popular vacation destination in the world. The Waikiki beach is the most filmed and most crowded beaches in the entire world. Waikiki is a fantastic place for surfers across the world, especially for beginners, it is even more exciting and safe with the surf being gentle as the waves rarely rise above six feet.

People come here to the Waikiki beach from distant places to learn the art of surfing. These surfing lessons are very popular and have been given since long. On the beach, one rent any kind of equipment any kind of water sport.

There are more than 100 lodging establishments and there are more than 60 Hotels and some 25 condominium hotels. This number is changing rapidly as the former hotels are changing to condominium units. The Moana hotel was one of the very first hotels in the Waikiki and Pink Palace of the Pacific being one of the most famous one. The hotels and resorts offer some of the most beautiful and luxurious stays to make our vacation truly remembered for a long time.

This place also offers some mind blowing street performances all along the Kalakaua Avenue and the guests are mesmerised looking at the Hawaiian culture.

Waikiki is an awesome place to shop as well inexpensive Hawaiian jewellery to the expensive ones. Almost all the clothing brands are having their respective outlets here and are also lined with some of the world’s best designer boutiques. DFS Galleria Hawaii is a place which offers duty free shopping on some of most well known brands.

The Damien Museum exhibits some of the most contemporary works by Father Damien as a tribute for his work in Kalaupapa, who was canonized as a saint.

The Waikiki Aquarium features some of the rarest species of aquatic habitat and is special for reef life, seals, sharks and a hatchery.

Kapiolani Park is another place which tends to be a great picnic spot, a great sporting arena which offers variety of activities like swimming, tennis, soccer, archery and many others. This park is spread across 500 acres and is a home for some of the oldest trees of this Island. Splendid evening shows on the weekends are also a must watch here.
