Puebla Vacations
Puebla is located in central Mexico, 424 Km from Mexico City. It owns it existence and architectural splendor to a wealth of mineral deposits. Founded by Franciscans in 1592, soon after this the Spanish discovered the gold in the area and the city was developed.
This state is remembered for the famous battle of Cinco de Mayo, which origins were back in 1861, when Congress decided to delay international payments because they lacked money; reached an agreement with England and Spain, but France disagreed. Napoleon III saw the opportunity to expand his kingdom to America by invading Mexico. Under the command of General Ignacio Zaragoza, the Mexican Army totally defeated the French Army, by taking advantage of the location of Loreto and Guadalupe Forts. This victory was an immense achievement for Mexico, but more important was the moral impact of it: The people saw that the foreigners were not invincible and that the Mexican troops were capable to confront the most powerful army of the world.
Puebla state adjoins to the North with Hidalgo and Veracruz states; to the East with Veracruz and Oaxaca states; to the South with Oaxaca and Guerrero states; to the West with Guerrero, Morelos, Mexico, Tlaxcala and Hidalgo.
The capital of this state bears the same name and downtown is considered to be as Heritage of Mankind, due to the variety of historical buildings in there, such as temples, ex-convents, a very old library called the “Palafoxiana Library” with a baroque style, built in 1773. It was called this way because of a wealthy man whose name was Don Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, who donated 5,000 books for this private library -which originally was a chapel- Nowadays, it has over 43,000 books most of them written in dead languages: Hebrew, Latin, Sanskrit, Chaldean and Greek. Another portion of the cultural equipment is written in Nahuatl (an Indian language) and very few of them can be read in Spanish. Pamphlets from the XIX Century can be seen there. This historical monument is unique in all America and because of its essence; it is restricted only to specialists and investigators. The oldest text kept in this place dates from 1493: The Chronic of Nuremberg by Hartman Schedel.
Another beautiful building Puebla tourism enjoys is “La Casa del Alfeñique” (The House of Finickiness). It dates from XVIII century and it is said that a gentleman promised his wife to build a house for her with sugar paste or almond nougat. Therefore, the adornments of this marvelous building were inspired on these ingredients. All the materials used in this house are combined with mortar. Today it's the location for the Regional Museum.
The building that is today occupied by the University of Puebla, was built in 1578 being initially a private catholic school. It fills up a whole block, counting with three big patios, numberless vaults and domes.
Puebla has several Golf Courses and its night life is a lot of fun!
Out of the capital city, Puebla has several waterfalls, lagoons, caves, spring waters and rivers. There is also Africam Safari where a wide variety of wild animals are moving freely cohabiting as if they were in their natural habitat. It was established in 1972. It is located at Km. 16.5 Carr. Puebla-Valsequillo.
You and your family can visit the Ecological Park “Mexican Revolution”- where the hallucinations have wings. In this magic place you can find all kinds of exotic and lovely birds, with the most beautiful colors flying around you. It is a wonderful experience and enjoy.
The archaeological sites are one of Puebla attractions: Cantona, flourishing between 600 and 1000 A.D. where three magnificent units of complex urban structure are found. It has several sets of pyramids, squares and habitable units; an Acropolis and 24 ball games. Because of its favorable location at two thousand five hundred meters above the sea level, Cantona started taking shape as a fortress-city with totally controlled entrances and strategic military posts, controlling the exploitation and traffic of obsidian in the whole region.
Cholula is one the most important archaeological sites in Puebla. Travel shortly to visit it. It’s conformed by several pyramids that were overlapped during six centuries on a basement lateral of 450 meters and 65 meters high; two times greater than the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan and four times greater in volume than the pyramid of Cheops in Egypt.
