Duisburg is a big city in western Germany which is plays an important role for the economy of the country. Over many years, in this part of the world, Germans exploited the region's natural resources, and mined copper, iron, tin and other metals. Nowadays, Duisburg produces about 50% of Germany's hot metal and 35 percent of the country's pig-iron. Utilizing pig iron and other metals, the factories in the city produce large amounts of steel, and this has been going on for more than a hundred years. During the second World War, Duisburg played a very important role in the country's war industry. They also had a coal excavation, but it was closed in the summer of 2009.

Clearly, travelers will not go to this city to tour the factories, unless they really like the "How it's made" television show on the Discovery Channel. They would, however, go there to see life in Duisburg from other points of view. And the city offers plenty of activities to satisfy everyone.

First checkpoint, the Zoo. A perfect spot for animal lovers. They keep various animals there, in fine living conditions and excellent artificial environments. The Zoo was made in such a way to induce a person the feeling that they are really walking into the wild. Wide spaces, a really small number of pens, a lot of light, many distinct types of plants, each scene being a cool substitute for the natural living surroundings for particular types of animals.

The town of Duisburg also offers the possibility to visit the largest inland port on the globe. Enjoy the Inner Harbor from one of the many pubs, cafes or bars, or explore it from the water on an interesting harbor cruise. Whether you are a fan of sports, culture, food or drink, you are not going to get bored at the Inner Harbor. Jogging, walking, cultural activities, excellent restaurants, lovely sights – the Inner Harbor has been, for a long time now, the heart of Duisburg's social and sporting activities.

Another interesting feature is the Wedau Water World, an amusement park full of fun, sun and leisure. Made with the idea to make visitors relax and unwind no matter what their age is, the Wedau Water World gets visitors with big water slides, high-rope balance activities, boat rides, canoe rides and more.

Bewitching architecture and edifices in this town include: the bridge between the neighborhoods Duissern and Meiderich. Built in the 1900s, this link is proof of German labor discipline and precision planning. Then, we have the Alte Post, an emblematic house of yellow brick and beautiful red sandstone, this is the old post office, placed in front of the Town Hall. Another architectural point of interest is the Dreigiebelhaus, a historic jewel, the oldest building still standing in Duisburg (raised in the 16th century). In the end, we get at the mills of Duisburg, which are very cute. You'll see eight mills in total, 6 of which are historical, made of red bricks and displaying a design you only saw in Hollywood movies with Frankenstein or Dracula.

Nobody has ever repented after going to Duisburg for the holidays, thus, if you too decide to choose this destination, don't worry, there are zero chances to regret it.
