"Bemidji" is an Ojibwe term, Bemidjigamaag, which means "lake with cross waters." It is an apt description of beautiful Bemidji, MN, the first city on the Mississippi River established in 1896. Over 13,000 individuals from various walks of life call Bemidji home. With its splendid landscape, and recreational, economic and educational opportunities, Bemidji is a terrific town to visit or put down roots.
Education
Bemidji is committed to educating all of its citizens from pre-K through graduate school, enabling them to become responsible civic servants. Bemidji Independent School District includes six elementary schools, one middle school, two high schools, and three alternative schools. Several private schools are available to youngsters as well.
For those interested in pursuing higher education, Oakhills Christian College, Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College (NTC) can give prospective students an edge in a turbulent job market.
NTC offers diplomas, certificates and associates degrees for a range of careers including medical coding, associate accounting and massage therapy. Bemidji State offers over 65 majors and pre-professional programs, while students at Oakhills can earn a bachelor's degree in fields such as biblical studies and worship arts of biblical studies and psychology.
Recreation and Entertainment
All work and no play makes for a dull individual, which is why visitors and residents enjoy a plethora of activities during their downtime. Hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, in-line skating, fishing, boating, and simply taking an afternoon stroll are all activities that one can enjoy throughout the city. For those interested in arts and culture, the Paul Bunyan Playhouse and Bemidji State University offer theater shows throughout the year and downtown is host to over 40 pieces of sculpture. And do not forget to try your luck at Palace Casino & Hotel, Shooting Star Casino Hotel or enjoy wine at Forestedge Winery.
Economic Climate
The recent recession struck a blow throughout the nationwide economy, stripping cities of jobs and resulting in massive unemployment. As the country improves so will cities, including Bemidji. More than a dozen different types of industries can be found within the town, ranging from advertising and media to construction and real estate. The Bemidji Chamber of Commerce works with several economic development organizations in the city to help increase employment for Bemidji residents.
