Mossman is a small town strategically located 20km north of Port Douglas and 70 kms north of Cairns on the scenic Cook highway. It offers the chance to see some of the regions magnificent natural tourist attractions while returning only a short trip to your home base in the region’s most sought after tourist location, Port Douglas.

It is the perfect example of an agricultural town which has kept pace with the times. It is a beautiful town at the foothill of mountains, the highest being Mount Demi. The scenic locations here remain in the minds of the tourists who always relish the chance to enjoy time real close to nature here at Mossman. The locals are generally very friendly and ensure that tourists feel at home.

Mossman is most famous for the Mossman Gorge – a truly magnificent site of bubbling swirling waters passing massive granite boulders, which are often photographed to capture their changing colours in the light, somewhat reminiscent of Ayers Rock !

The Mossman Gorge which is a part of the heritage Daintree forests is a breathtaking view with the Mossman river flowing down beautifully down the huge stones lined beautifully by nature. Guided bushwalks, traditional dance performances are a great way to see the traditional ways and style of the Mossman folk. Tours of plantations growing a number of tropical fruits is an experience in itself. One can make trips to the Daintree National Park and the Cape Tribulation National Park from Mossman and spend some beautiful moments watching the wide variety of flora and fauna that is so characteristic of Australia.

Another of the major attractions here is the Mossman Central Mill .If one is here during the crushing season which extends from June to October then the guided tour of the processing in the sugarcane mill is a sight to behold.

On the sugar theme, the Bally Hooley Steam Express – the steam train in Port Douglas which runs through the beautiful sugar cane fields is a beauty !

Travelling light and carrying a lot of sun protection gear is the mantra to enjoy the Mossman holiday. One must wear comfortable clothing and footwear to help take the hard work out of the long walks.

The shopping experience at the many small shops is delightful and the tourists can take back with them lovely traditional mementos of their visit here.

The dining experience at Mossman is earthy Australian and great value ‘tucker’ such as a huge steak, chips and veges, or local seafood with accompaniments, is on offer at a number of eateries.

Limited mainstream accommodation exists in Mossman Township itself, as most people either opt for the convenience of the more tourist-oriented Port Douglas or the complete seclusion of a rainforest hideaway.
