Some collectors, to a certain extent, prefer collecting the smaller scale group of model trains. Not all locomotive collectors prefer one size when it comes to the trains they collect. Some collectors like collecting locomotives from the large scale groups. Usually, large scale trains are better for outdoor use while the smaller scale trains are more suitable for indoors.

The HO model train was first manufactured in the thirties. It was supposedly a replacement for the OO scale, UK’s most popular scale. This plan failed because the OO scale was extremely popular during that time. Then came the fifties where the HO scale got its big break. There was a need for realistic toy locomotives in the USA. The HO scale was the answer to this need. Since then, the HO model train has been a crowd favourite.

When the HO scale boomed in the market, different international manufacturers created a selection of HO scale accessories and rolling stock. Available to the public were ready-to-run trains, craftsman grade kits, equipments for constructing models, limited edition brass locomotives and modular tracks. Some HO scale collectors even go abroad just to get pieces that will complete their collection.

The HO in the HO scale literally means half of an O, or half an O scale. The O scale is 1/48th or one 48th the standard size of a train. It is a part of the large group and runs on a gauge of 1 ¼ inches. O scale model trains are extremely popular to hobbyists all over the world, but it cannot cater to those who prefer a smaller version of this train. Hence, the need for a smaller model train such as the HO scale rose.

HO model trains have a scale of 1/87 and use the 16.5mm track gauge. Hobbyists who prefer putting a lot of details in the scenery and the landscape, prefer the HO scale model train because of its size. It is not too big, which means it leaves space for such intricate details such as tunnels, hills, and towns. A lot of people are worried when it comes to the durability and child-friendliness of a scale. The HO scale is both durable and child-friendly. It is not too small, it is not easily broken when played by children. It is not too small that the details are blurred with the size. It is the perfect balance between the large model trains and the small model trains. This is precisely the reason why HO scales are very well-known in the world of model train hobbyists.

Collecting model trains is serious business to some. It is an awesome hobby because it pushes you to be creative and artistic. The HO scale model train is perfect for the artist in you. It is the perfect indoor model train. HO model trains are collected by a lot of people due to different reasons. But I guess the most popular reason is its size and durability. Go ahead and start a model train collection to cheer up the kid in you.
