Truck driving has always been one of the hardest professions around. Since the very beginning of the business in the early 20's of the 20th century, the demands to these hard men and women have always been the same - deliver goods fast. Even safety does not matter that much put next to fast delivery, and with the harsh competition that always existed in the niche of land transportation things are only getting harder.

To be a successful truck driver nowadays means you will have to sacrifice parts of your personal life, your relationship with the family and relatives.

It is certainly a hard choice and that's why so many truck drivers decide to seek another source of income before the first year has passed. Add to that the potential danger while on road, both en route and while you rest. For these reasons amongst others this is why only strong and independent men and woman succeed in this industry.

You might already wonder why anyone would want to do such job any way, with all of this negativity. Well, to say it straight - the life of a trucker is the life of a free man. If you don't want to sit behind a desk in a little cubicle and do repetitive dull tasks each day, this is the job for you. You will be visiting different places each day. Your friends will be scattered through the whole continent and you will feel at home everywhere. With the advantages of modern technology you will be able to even keep in touch with your loved ones back home, as now you can pickup a cheap laptop with WiFi or GPRS Internet access and call home any time - even video chat with your family. This was the dream of many generations of truckers, to be able to keep in touch with their family and still remain as free as a bird.

With all the new rules in this sector the life of a truck driver may seem like more fun less work, but you should not be confused by the fact that there are strict regulations telling the driver not to be on the road for more than x and y hours per day (this might be different in each County or Country), During your spare time why not look at doing some preventive maintenance or inspect the cargo.

This is your career if you feel people are boring and not so interesting most of the time, but you should really think twice before you start. You will be always on the road - "a rolling stone" who provides well for his or her family and works long hours traveling the Country or internationally and lives free as a bird, becoming a truck driver is definitely the way to go.

Just be persistent in your choice, as the first year or two will be the hardest time for the newcomer, so be strong and you will succeed. In few years you might even buy your own truck, start a transportation company, the possibility for development is always there if you wish to use it.
