Developed in 1880 by English mathematician and engineer Olivier Heavyside coaxial cables are widely used these days. It is used as a transmission line for radio frequency signals and applications such as distributing cable television signals, connecting radio transmitters & receivers with their antennas and internet connections. Coaxial cable connectors are designed to maintain a coaxial form across the connection and have the same well defined impedance as the attached cable. These are plated with high conductivity material like gold or silver which helps it to render high performance.
Types
The coaxial cable connectors come in different varieties and are used in various fields like communications, instruments etc. The most commonly used type of connector if the RF or Radio Frequency coax cable connector which further comes in various forms namely
UHF Connector (designed by Amphenol company for use in the radio industry),
N- type connector (used in broadcast and communications equipment available in 50 ohm & 75 ohm versions),
BNC connector (used in oscilloscopes and many other laboratory instruments and available in 50 ohm version),
TNC Connector (was designed mainly to overcome problems during vibration, most of them are specified to 11 GHz and some of them are specified to 18 GHz.)
SMA Connector ( it is a sub- miniature RF coaxial cable connector and finds many applications for providing connectivity for RF assemblies within equipments.)
SMB Connector (is also a type of subminiature connector and has the ability to connect and disconnect swiftly as the major advantage.)
SMC Connector (normally specified to operate frequencies upto 10 GHz it is a good combination of small size and performance.)
MCX Connector (it is a type of micro miniature RF connector and have been developed to meet the growing demand for cost effective, high quality smaller connections & found important use in cellular phone industry.)
MMCX Connector (it is 45% smaller than SMB and widely used in the telecommunications industry, provides a snap fitting and also uses a slot-less design to minimize leakage.)
Installation
Installing a coaxial cable connector is not a very difficult process. You have to follow a set of steps starting with determining the size of your coaxial cable and preparing the end of the coaxial cable where it is to be attached by cutting the cable flush. It is to be trimmed ½ an inch and then the black inner braiding is to be pulled out without disturbing the copper center conductor. Then you have to trim back the dielectric plastic from the inner core cable. The connector is then to be pushed down over the cable end so that copper core of the coaxial cable sticks out. Then at last you need to screw the connector into the end of the cable, the thread will cut into the outer housing and wrap the shielding weave making a tight fit.
