When you think of the city of Chicago, the first things that come to mind are the things that Chicago has made famous, things like hot dogs, Michigan Ave., and baseball. And as true as it is, Chicago has other hidden secretes.
Chicago is made up of many different neighborhoods that blend beautifully together, but remain ethnically diverse. Within its main city borders you will find Little Italy, Greektown, Chinatown and the Polish Triangle. Each of these unique neighborhoods boasts its regional pride through specialty foods and local events spotlighting a rainbow of cultures.
If you want to sample the world without having to update your passport then let Chicago be your magic carpet and enjoy the ride. Here are just a few examples localized cultures that you should include in your travel itinerary.
This Italian community is located on Taylor Street on Near West Side, right next to the University of Illinois-Chicago campus. You cannot think of this area and not want to sample the cuisine that has made it famous. A walk west on Taylor Street from Halsted Street to Ashland Ave will reveal everything that your taste buds desire. You will find everything from upscale restaurants, to small take that have been there for generations offering the "best" subs and Chicago style pizzas. Make sure to finish off your dining experience with a frosty scoop of Italian Ice. While in the neighborhood be sure to visit the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. Here you will find information of some of or nation’s greatest Italian American sportspersons, like Mario Andretti, Joe DiMaggio and Boxing great Rocky Marciano.
Greektown meanders down Halsted Street towards Van Burren Street north to Washington Boulevard. This is in the cities West Loop neighborhood. There is no mistaken your arrival into this historic neighborhood. You will see that local business have their advertisements in English as well as Greek. The surprise will be the feeling that you get once you have walked the shops and restaurants. You will at times get the sense that you have been transported to some weathered place in the Mediterranean.
You will find these and other amazing neighborhoods to travel and sample specialty cuisines. No matter what your taste is, Chicago has it all. Next time you are thinking of taking a trip, include Chicago in your travel itinerary. You will be amazed at the wealth of cultures and history that this northern city has to offer.
