The phrase sexually transmitted disease implies a disorder which spreads through sexual contact. Such diseases are also known as sexually transmitted infections, as the nature of these disorders are contagious that is, involving transmission of the pathogen from one host to another through sexual contact. Sexual contact includes vaginal, anal and oral sex. Even sexual toys are not excluded from the group. Among many such sexually contracted diseases, genital herpes is one of the threatening disorders. By understanding its symptoms we can decide on the procedures of treatment.

Commonly known as herpes, and clinically genital herpes,it is a viral infection that spreads through viral attack. HSV (herpes simplex virus) which is transmitted by direct sexual contact, attacks the mucous membranes present on the external genital parts. The virus makes its path through the miniscule tears in the skin. It travels all the way up to the spinal cord through the nerve roots and settles there permanently. From here the virus shows its first symptom by producing infection in the initial entry site.

When it reaches the external genitalia skin, it produces redness and blisters. The appearance of these blisters is sporadic. They can appear in weeks and in many unfortunate cases in years as well. The occurrence in years makes the diagnosis of the symptoms quite difficult.

There are two types of virus producing genital herpes. The first type HSV 1 produces blisters and sores around the mouth, whereas HSV 2 is responsible in causing lesions in the genital areas of the skin. The appearance of symptoms of herpes is closely linked with the operation of the immunity system of the body. Women who already have weak immune systems, the outbreaks of this sexually transmitted disease, herpes have longer lasting effect on them.

In U.S.A. almost 50 million of the population is infected with this sexually transmitted disease, herpes. Among adults who are sexually active and carry the virus, the percentage is 60. This high rate is so because most women are ignorant of the symptoms of herpes. When they at all get to detect it they tend to overlook the symptoms. The mild symptoms which are usually overlooked by most victims are itching, burning sensation in genital areas. If closely observed, the symptoms usually surface within two weeks of the infection. The symptoms are definitely mild but one should never make the mistake of ignoring it. Redness, blisters and ulcer formation in the genital areas are common symptoms.

If immediately treated, and if one abstains from sex for at least 7 days these symptoms are minimized and the infection can be properly eradicated by following the instructions of your physicians strictly. A checkup of your partner is also advisable in this case, to avoid further infection in future.
