Living with a physical disability or illness of any sort does not mean someone cannot have sexual desires just as any one else. Stereotyping of disabled people is a common practice. Many just assume that someone with a physical disability is no longer capable of experiencing sexual pleasure. Having a physical disability does not mean somebody does not have sexual desires just like every one else. However the type of disability certainly will influence the aspects of ones sex life.

Many disabled people may suffer with pain, physical fatigue, and even limited motor control as a result of their disability. This could make fulfilling their sexual urges more difficult, but not impossible. Some people living with a disability or illness may wonder whether they can experience sexuality in a satisfying and enjoyable way again.

It’s hard for most to imagine being disabled. Many illnesses may not even be recognized by some as an illness that could interfere with someone’s sexual intimacy until they are diagnosed with it themselves. Suffering from diabetes for example can result in sexual dysfunction, in men especially, leading to the inability to achieve erections. This does not mean the ability to achieve orgasm is not possible. Alternative methods can be used such as prostate stimulation. Sexual intercourse can even be possible with the use of pumps and erection rings. Hollow strap ons are even available to make penetration possible with a partner, if desired, with out the need of an erection.

Other illnesses, for instance, MS which can limit motor control and cause chronic pain, can be overcome by adapting to different positions to find one that is comfortable. The use of sex toys that require less movement and less gripping with the hands to operate can be of benefit for these types of illnesses. The same technique could be applied for sufferers of back pain, arthritis, or muscular disorders, as well as a variety of other conditions.

An important first step to a rewarding sexual relationship involves communicating openly and directly with your partner. This is important whether a disability or illness is involved or not. Communication with your partner and experimenting with different techniques is always the key to a healthy sexual relationship. Maintaining a healthy sexual attitude will be much harder for persons who suffer from any kind of disability. It’s common to feel less sexually desirable, and to think that enjoying a rewarding sexual lifestyle could be nearly impossible. Sometimes a partner may be afraid to interact because of fears of injuring their partner.

These are all problems that could be overcome, and enjoying a satisfying sex life, for most, is a very real possibility. Experimenting with different positions, the use of pillows and even sex toys, may aid in the fulfillment of sexual pleasure. Many toys today are adaptable to accommodate many different types of use. The use of toys with suction cups for mounting and with remotes can be helpful for someone with limited use of their hands making it hard to manipulate a toy. Many toys come with straps to attach to the area of your body you want to stimulate. This allows for complete hands free operation once it is in place. These types of toys could also be used by strapping them to a small pillow and positioning the pillow in a way that will allow for the best stimulation of a particular area.

Depending on your disability or illness you may experience decreased sensation in areas of your body as a result. Always use caution when dealing with decreased sensation that may be related to your type of illness or disability when using sex toys. Excessive pressure or rubbing can cause injury and may not be felt due to this decreased sensation. Always be observant of your body’s reaction and proceed slowly until you find a combination that works best for you.

Sex furniture could be an option for someone with limited movement. Products such as the "Liberator Ramp" provide an incredible advantage to maintain certain positions. This product is a comfortable foam ramp that provides support and control. It gives support for you while allowing a better position for both parties. This could be helpful if finding the right position and maintaining that position is difficult. Swings are also available for aiding in this and can allow added movement with very little physical activity. Machines are also built to provide a complete hands free experience and can deliver powerful sensations even without a partner. Seats that come with a mountable toy for insertion, with models varying from vibrating to rotating for stimulation are also available.

With most types of disability, mobility is almost always an issue, reaching certain areas can be difficult. Most sex toys can be adapted to accommodate this. The use of what ever device you use to reach other things can usually be used with sex toys as well.

Finding a toy with easy to operate buttons and switches is also a wise choice. With many disabilities and illnesses, fatigue is an issue, so you should keep in mind the weight of the toy. Thinking of ideas to help support the toy, to relieve weight from holding it, can help. The use of pillows can be helpful for propping the toy in this respect.

How easy the toy will be to clean is another consideration to remember. Some toys are harder to clean than others. A water proof toy for example is the easiest to clean since it can be completely immersed in water. This could be helpful in clean up since it can be difficult to hold on to wet items with limited grip. Not having to worry if it goes under the water will make things much easier. Using a condom on the toy can also be a benefit if it’s possible for you to get one on it. Condoms will extend the life of the toy as well as speeding up the clean up time.

What ever the case may be, there is hope for an enjoyable sexual lifestyle for almost every one. Always remember, communication with your partner is the first step and don’t be afraid to express your feelings to them. Ask them for help finding the right toys to make it possible to achieve a fulfilling, sexual relationship with them. Look at different kinds of sex toys and think of ways it could be made easier for you to use. What kind would be easiest to clean and provide the best stimulation? Vibrators for instance can range in intensity from very mild and soft vibrations, to very hard and fast vibrations. With thousands available to choose from, there is one made to suit everyone. So it doesn’t matter if you have a partner of not, you should be able to find a toy, to satisfy your urge to experience orgasm again. Always remember to play safe, and clean your toys after each use.

This is a great article. People living with disabilities have as much right as non-disabled people to fulfil their sexual desires and if sex toys help them to do this then all the better.
