It can take a very long time to understand the numerous traditions of a Bangladeshi marriage customs, each of which is split into occasions. Each event has at least a day in between, time for the preparations to take place.

Originally the first two celebrations consisted of the Gaye Holud of the bride, followed by the groom’s. These days the occasion of getting engaged has experienced a sharp increase in popularity and become the initiator to kick start the sequence of celebrations.

Events celebrating engagement are intimate gathering of the immediate and very close family members of the couple getting married. Traditionally, families arranged the marriage between the prospective couple, and the engagement ceremony usually consisted of the groom's parents or guardians placing the ring on the bride's hand to officially 'engage' her for the marriage. In recent years this tradition has transformed where the groom himself places the ring on the bride-to-be’s hand, regardless of the relationship being arranged or not. This change in tradition has been warmly welcomed by the youths of now.

Bride and groom’s Gaye Holud makes up the third and fourth events of the wedding fun, which basically consists of the close family of the bride and groom getting together to be introduced to the couple. According to traditions the bride has her Gaye Holud first, followed by that of the groom.

The marriage ceremony is the penultimate part in this sequence of events. According to heritage the bride’s side is expected to pay the costs of the wedding ceremony, ultimately turning them into the hosts of the main celebrations. Thus, the groom and his relatives are considered as the guests. According to usual culture guests arrive once the bride and her side have arrived. The bride and groom sit separately until a registrar and witnesses take the consent of both people getting married for marriage. Once the marriage is accepted officially, a blessing takes place for the couple’s long life. Only after that ritual has been completed the wedding couple are brought in the same room and the remainder of their day.

At the end is involves the reception ceremony which is entirely paid for by the groom's side, and thus considering the bride's side of the family are the guests this time round. However, traditionally it is believed that once a woman is married, with her surname she accepts her husband’s family as her own, formally leaving her parental family behind. Thus the bride is considered to be one of the hosts on the reception party.
