Purchasing a wedding band can be one of the most important decisions you will have to make, which is why many couples take their time when choosing what wedding band to use for their for their special day. As with tradition, the most common choice for wedding bands is gold. Knowing more about gold and its kinds will help you choose the best wedding rings.
Difference Between 18k and 14k Gold Wedding Bands
To be able to understand the difference between an 18k gold and 14k gold wedding band, you have to know the composition of the two metals. The karat measure that makes up pure gold is 24k. Although gold is a strong metal, it is also malleable. Because of the extreme softness of gold, it will be practically useless if it is not combined with other metals to harden it and manufacture it into jewelry. Basically, the difference between 14k gold and 18k gold is the gold that it contains.
18k gold comprises 75% gold and 25 percent other metal. 14k gold is made up of 58.3% gold and 41.67 other metal. Other metals are mixed with gold to come up with a finer alloy—this is the process of achieving yellow or white gold. The color of a golden jewelry will depend on the metal that gold was combined with.
Other Types of Gold Wedding Bands
-
Yellow Gold Wedding Bands— this kind of wedding band is the most common among many wedded couples. Gold itself is a yellow gold wedding band. There are 24k, 18k, and 14k yellow gold wedding bands that are available in many jewelry stores. Remember that the higher the carat of the gold, the more expensive and softer it is.
-
White Gold Wedding Bands— this kind of wedding band is popular among the younger couples who want a different kind of ring for their wedding. White gold is basically a white metal (such as silver or palladium) that is mixed with gold. Its measurement is until 21k. The amount of gold that can be found in white gold jewelries is basically the same, only that the alloy that was used is different. White gold is usually chosen as a substitute for platinum wedding bands which are rather expensive.
-
Pink Gold Wedding Bands— a pink gold wedding band is basically made up of gold, mixed with a metal such as copper to produce a reddish mixture. For couples who are adventurous about things and want to try something new and unique for their wedding, pink gold wedding bands are perfect.
-
Two-Tone Wedding Bands— this is a new trend for many young couples of today. A two-tone wedding band is created by combining different kinds of gold to create a stylish design. Since there are many kinds and colors of gold, many beautiful combinations are made from two or three different kinds of gold.
Whatever your choices, what is important is that you and your partner agrees with the kind of wedding band you will use. Since you will be wearing it for the rest of your lives with each other, it has to be made special.
